PDF icons on desktop turn into black squares

Hi all. My Windows 10 Pro x64 computer (v. 10.0.19042, Build 19042) has developed an odd problem. The desktop icon for PDF files (a wallpaper image of the first page of the file), turns to black after a period of time.

If I right-click on the desktop, select "Display Settings", and change "Scale and Layout Size" to a different setting, such as 125%, the icon will then display properly for a short period of time, but will eventually revert to a black square. Resetting the scale again will always, but only temporarily, cure the issue.

I have the latest drivers for my GeForce GTX 1070 Ti graphics card (NVIDIA Studio Driver v. 461.40)

I have the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (v. 2020.013.20074), and "Enable PDF Thumbnail Preview in Windows Explorer" is enabled. It is also set as the default program for opening PDF files.

Also, I have deleted the icon cache several times using a batch file.

Does anyone have any ideas on what's happening?

    Thanks.

I do not have Acrobat DC reader, and on my machine the thumbnail displayed is the icon of whichever browser I choose to open it with. Is the first page image a function of Acrobat? Is that how it does the first page image?

    PDF

This is the way it looks if you have Adobe Acrobat DC, it should be the same for Adobe Reader DC.

Agree, that's why I'm curious how the OP is setting that function. Thanks for the pic.

These two pictures show how the icon is supposed to look and what it eventually becomes. It is associated with the Adobe Reader App as indicated by the small Acrobat badge in the bottom right corner. It's supposed to show the first page of the PDF file, as shown on the right, but eventually it always goes black, as shown on the left.

    Thanks.

    From your first post:

I have the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (v. 2020.013.20074), and "Enable PDF Thumbnail Preview in Windows Explorer" is enabled. It is also set as the default program for opening PDF files.

That is a function of Acrobat Reader settings. Check your Windows Explorer view settings to make sure you don't have a conflict. The box indicated in this pic should be unchecked.

Thanks Spunk for the suggestion. Those people seem to be complaining about the same issue I'm having. It appears not to have been resolved, as an Adobe employee posted as follows:
