Quite peculiar indeed. This machine boots, I get the little circle dot progress icons, then at varying times, the desktop will turn completely black and blank, but the mouse cursor still works fine. Sometimes the desktop will load entirely and the screen goes out after a couple minutes, sometimes windows loads right into the black screen with mouse cursor. This is a pretty old machine(has a 1394 port and a modem) and has no independent graphics card.

    What logs can I check?

You run it and one of two things will happen --

    1. If you pass with no integrity violations, your first question lives on ("What's wrong?")

    2. If you get a paragraph about CBS.logs and corruption you have to run a new test --

-- to fix the corruption, see if it claims its fixed, and run another SFC and get a clean result. Then the notion is you fixed things... but the only way to know that is if your issue has gone away. If not, back to "What's wrong?"

Well since I cannot make it to a desktop, I rebooted into the WinRE, went into troubleshooting>advanced options>command prompt. That did not take me to C: however. I landed at X:\windows\system32 which I issued "sfc /scannow". It went through to 100% then reported "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.".

I jacked up something. What'd I do wrong?

My bad. I thought you could get to desktop but that it was black. So now you need a PRO to chime in.

Nah, start button does nothing, no ctrl-alt-delete, no nothing.
