    Now running Windows 10 v20H2

    Hi all

Just an update to my earlier posts...

Even though I had used the Windows show/hide program to stop my 4 year old HP Envy notebook updating for some reason it started the update tonight... panic set in!

The first time I tried this both to v2004 and v20H2 the update took about 6 hours to do... and then I had big issues with boot up and shut down times, so both times i went back to v1909

About a month ago I upgraded to an SSD from the original HDD and always thought I really need to update so although I was in full panic I let it do it and had my Macrium back up just in case...

First thing.. it took about 45 mins to upgrade from v1909 to v20H2...

Second thing and I have only tried once so far, start up from pressing the power button to a useable desktop was 35 seconds and shut down about 25 seconds, about 5 seconds longer than v1909 ....so it looks like the new SSD has made a big difference or the issues have been fixed by Microsoft... guess I will never know.. but I will see how it goes..

When I did it last time with the HDD it was taking up to 5-8 mins to start up and similar to shut down ....

    One question...

When I updated before in the Windows update page it gave the option to install additional drivers... this is not shown now, will it appear when it checks for updates next... all I see now is

Stuart, you mentioned that you were using the windows Show / Hide utility to hide those optional driver updates, right?

If you run that utility again to unhide those updates, they should show up again.

    Hi

No that was to stop the 20H2 update only

If I remember right if you look around the area that says what's new, just above check now it had a link to show additional updates such as other drivers..

Maybe you I am wrong and the it is in another area not sure if you can check for me... Maybe next time it or I check for updates it appears

That's right. It's right under the Check for updates, but only if you have nit hidden them. You might want to run that util to verify what you have hidden.

That's the message.... Am I correct in saying next time it checks for updates it will produce the list and the link will appear?

When I updates the last twice the first thing I did was press check for updates and it appeared there

    Will try it tonight

Stuart, it will show the message "View optional updates" if it finds any optional updates either during it's normal periodic check or by you selecting the option to check for updates. Of course, if it finds no optional updates, or if you have hidden them all using the Show / Hide tool, this message will not be displayed.

All sorted... it checked for updates itself tonight as usual and found a couple of updates, and it now shows all the optional updates...

Amazed the difference this SSD has made, 45 mins start to finish for the v1909 to v20H2 update which, even on a good day took a couple of hours with the old HDD .... and the two updates took a matter of minutes from installing to restarted... best upgrade I have done lol ...

I can't live without an SSD any longer. I tend to run multiple simultaneous VMs. When I do stuff like start multiple VMs almost simultaneously a spinning disk gets thrashed and it can take 30 minutes to do what an SSD does in 30 seconds.

They are also great in laptops where you no longer have to worry about a strong bump crashing the HD.

    Mine is a laptop...

I did the upgrade the early December, boot up takes about 25-35 seconds to a usable desktop rather than a couple of minutes or so... and the upgrades/updates much quicker

When I had the issues with upgrading to 20H2 with the HDD the reason I went back to 1909 was the boot and shutdown took 5-8 mins and the feature update took 6 hours!...

It upgraded last night by accident and I was dreading it... thought the Macrium image would be used again... but it took 45 mins start to finish and boot/shutdown is now the same as before, maybe a few seconds more... but 35 seconds max...

No idea why the update works with the SSD but not the HDD unless the HP 3D Driveguard which protect the HDD from drops and knocks as you say was the issue and as the SSD does not need it the issue was solved.. .or maybe Microsoft have fixed an issue between the last time, about September last year and now which helped.. but so far I am happy :)
