Hopefully ESET have fixed this for good now.

Next on the list is for them to fix the HOPS problem on Insider builds.

I registered just to say thank you guys for all of this. I was banging my head against this issue for months revisiting it with no luck.

I had no idea it was tied to ESET, but lo and behold it was the issue. I had previously tried numerous "fixes" regarding {42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1} -- many of which asked to delete it.

I got my desktop back and I'm as happy as a clam. Thanks again!
So you fixed the problem by deleting both files?
(I mean 42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1 and the other one).

    Or deleting the Defaults?

This for me is not working. I tried both options and the next day we returned to its original state - all the icons on the left side. When I go into regedit and see what is in both the key and see that sitting back to back situation, which is the extension * Shell32.dll. As shown ESET constantly checks the keys. I do not know what bidalo still do.
My workaround is to create a Shutdown script in gpedit.msc so that the two registries will be revised automatically in each shutdown (and hence all icons will be at right positions next boot). Steps as follows:

    1) Run gpedit.msc
    2) Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Scripts -> Shutdown -> Properties -> Add
    3) Input Script: regedit
    4) Script Parameters: /s C:\Win10-Fix_Icons.reg

Assuming the Win10-Fix_Icons.reg file is stored in C:\ root directory.

Note that similar Logoff script can be created if you see fit:
2a) User Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Scripts -> Logon or Logoff -> Properties -> Add

Cleaner module 1114 fixes it. If on V8 it must be 8.0.319.0 V8 is the only one compatible with W10

If it doesn't update via the regular update do it via the pre-release update.

I have v7 installed and it did prompt me to upgrade for compatibility with win 10 but I didn't as everything was fine. So to fix the icon problem I need to upgrade as I'm not getting that upgrade prompt again

    Hi Lads,

Well, for a time after fixing registry keys it worked (maybe a day or two) then it changed and icons started flying again, I've started experimenting with limiting access, changing default value of the key etc. , at some point both keys stood "windows storage" but the icons kept changing and of course uninstalling eset didnt help at all. I also tried to delete both keys.. didnt help either, now i dont have them... the icons stay the same....

My sloppyness caused deletion of my reg-backup.... could somebody copy me both keys (32&64) with their default values? Also users permissions would be nice....

Then I'll try one last time....
    How I did it:
    1. I uninstalled ESET via Windows' SAFE MODE.
    2. I used the ESETUninstaller found here Uninstallers (removal tools) for common Windows antivirus softwareESET Knowledgebase
    3. I booted back to normal Windows' mode.
    4. I edited the registry keys.

→ You might ask what Security Suite am I using now because I uninstalled ESET?
    Answer:
I'm just using 360 Total Security Essential 360 Total Security Essential | Download Free Antivirus for PC
It's free and it's lightweight like ESET. The protection is as good as ESET as well, with the option to add exceptions and such.
It doesn't have a Firewall bundled with it, so I am using GlassWire™ Firewall Software by GlassWire it's free as well with the option to buy.

→ Will I install ESET Smart Security again?
    Answer:
Yes, I will install it again whenever they are able to "PROPERLY" fix this bug together with the Microsoft.
If they can't fix it then I'll just stick to 360TS+GlassWire combo.

HAHAHA you know, company sales war ESET doesn't want you to use a FREE security suite. Don't worry 360TS is good.

It uses 3 virus databases = 360 Cloud Scan + Bitdefender + Avira

Yes it does. The notification window appears on the lower right of your screen.
It also has a history of the programs that have accessed the net.
