I have the same problem too... (minus the desktop icon problem.. 'cuz i use rainmeter for that)...

Since I upgraded to Windows 10, my folder view settings always reset to list or details.. it sucks.. so much...
I already did that registry-edit stuff but it didn't work..
I'm also wondering why my two coworker's PC didn't have that problem.. I upgraded their PC to Windows 10 too. One uses Windows 7 Professional while the other one uses Windows 8.1 Pro..

I'm kinda a perfectionist and this problem has been bugging me for awhile now..

Hi guyz, just to let you know.. I did a refresh on my PC... and I'm back from the start... but the "folder settings" are back to normal..

like normal-normal, it doesn't reset to "list" or "details" view anymore..

and no i did not refresh it because i couldn't handle the folder view bug, but Adobe After Effects is not working on my Windows 10 so i had to do it.. mehhh.,. i really regret upgrading to Windows 10 knowing it's not stable yet....

Also having this issue with my icons, as well as with my folder options. DesktopOK never worked for me, nor did any registry edits or cache cleaning or anything. I've been just dealing with the problems I guess until a fix will eventually come around. It's annoying, but downgrading to an earlier version of Windows, or even starting a fresh install of Windows 10 just isn't an option for me

well screw everything i've said above
not only is the folder-problem back... Windows Updates don't work properly too..
and my camera driver isn't working..
everything sucks with Windows 10... (for now)

wish MS can make a fix already..

Unfortunately I did same thing, also deleted whole my HDD partitions and make one new and after one day everything went back to broken icons and folders. But I have feeling that maybe that problem is doing some of the early updates what W10 installs sadly some of them cannot be uninstalled.

Hi all, I wanted to add that I also had the problem that most are facing. I did a system restore to find that both my folder settings and also desktop icons were restored back to how they were. The only two changes were that I had installed Samsung's Smart Switch program. Unlikely to be the cause, however a singular Windows 10 update was removed. I have since run through Windows updates again and so far it's been okay.

I've attached an image of the updates that were installed today for myself, luckily only a few. However I'd suggest trying a system restore first, or try to remove one of the following updates to see if it helps in anyway. I'll report back if anything changes.Windows 10: Folder View Settings and Desktop Icon Positions Not Saving-capture.png

    - that's actually a good idea.. but if I do that.. i'll lose the update on my NVIDIA driver that came with the buggy Windows Update... thanks though... as much as i want to do a system restore, i can't
cuz I'm still using my PC for work..
I'll just bear with the crappy folder settings for awhile..

    Hello guys,

The issue is back on my pc today. Looks like its a virus that makes something to system files or registry settings, that is related to folder view settings and desktop shortcuts settings.

Eset antivirus couldn't help nor detected any virus in my pc. Even torjan removal tools like roguekiller, malwarebytes showed any signs but I'm sure its a virus that is doing this. It happened when I plugged in a pendrive of my friend. I remember something had happened before after that I had to reset my PC.

Still struggling to find a which is that virus and what is that its breaking.

    Thanks...
    Best Regards

I'd still go with a system restore in that case, but once you've restored it and confirmed your icons/folder view are back to the way they're meant to be, boot into safe mode and remove that NVIDIA driver (I use "Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) V15.4.1.1" and it does a very good job and cleaning out drivers if you need to do a clean install of them). Then download the latest drivers and make a restore point again.

Although saying that, you could try to uninstall a few of the updates that pushed through from when you noticed the issue occur.
