    Possible Solution

In many cases, this is caused by your monitor. Yes, your monitor. When using some monitors connected via DisplayPort, turning OFF your monitor using the power button and back on again will cause this icon issue.

This is easy to test, Turn your monitor off for a minute, then back on. If your desktop icons moved, it's the monitor.

    Solutions:

    1. Don't turn off your monitor using the power button. Set Windows Power Mangement to turn your display off instead.

    or

    2. Switch your monitor cable connection to HDMI !!!

    Microsoft Official KB:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2625567

Cause: Monitor does not implement DisplayPort protocols properly.

I don't know a lot about ShellFolderfix and I've never tested it. But according to MajorGeeks "ShellFolderFix is the solution to Windows not remembering their size and position and also includes additional tweaks and shell enhancements" not icon positions. But I don't know. They also mention it was tested on Windows 10 as well. You can read more here:

Same problem, but I remember a old trick and Works for me:

    • Install "Desktop Restore" (http://www.midiox.com/) and save the current icons layout
    • backup all desktop icons to another location
    • delete all desktop icons (except system icons)
    • hit F5 (system icons may move to the left)
    • open a process manager (like Process Explorer)
    • Kill any Explorer.exe process (taskbar must gone)
    • hit F5
    • Run Explorer.exe to bring back the taskbar
    • move any system icon and hit F5 to verify the new position remains
    • restore all other icons
    • Using "Desktop Restore" restore all icons positions
    • Done
Many thanks, you saved my day :). Other solutions haven't worked for me but this one did the trick!

    Fix Icon positioning desktop ?

    hi people,

For now it is January 2016.

Is there yet an official windows fix available for saving the icons at their appropiate positions where I placed them on the desktop?

I have tried the registry fixes to check if the %SystemRoot%\system32\windows.storage.dll was set allright.. they were set allright.

I have tried several tools.. like ShellFolder Fix Desktop Ok DeskLock Desktop Icon Position Saver (64-bit)

IMO It doesn't have affection with:

    HDMI
    ESS
    Nvidia
Monitor power button.. for laptop users

    The error occurs randomly

The only moment when my icons where in good shape was the first time after upgrading from windows 8.1

I really wonder why this problem occurs suddenly at windows 10, at no other windows version before I had this problem. So I hope there will be a easy registry fix or so. I hate it to use extra 3rd party tools for such a "simple problem".

any new suggestions to hold the icons on place?

.. it doesn't happen for everyone, luckily not for me, so if it's the minority, it depends if MS notices I guess..

I hate Microsoft, the sloppiest company there is. If their programmers could only catch up with the prowess of their marketing geniuses, we would be happier users. Windows 8 was a stupid bust. So they introduce Windows 10 with great fanfare. I am so frustrated with Windows 10 since it keeps rearranging my icons. Don't they have the pride to introduce more than just a Beta version of their product? Have they considered turning over their programming business to Apple?? I want the stupid system to work and not waste time making corrections myself. Do you hear me you geniuses in Seattle????
