Just use Macrium, Acronis or whatever you use to make backup images and just restore the image you made prior to this issue. Takes 10 mins or less. I am sure by now nobody is dumb enough not to have backup images especially since Win 10 is new and there are going to be issues.
I might agree with you. I have an image created by Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2015, but was created shortly after installing Windows 10.
In the days after I started the customization and I began to install essential programs before creating a final image backup: the problem / bug hit first and then use that image bring me back virtually at the same point where I would go reinstalling Windows 10 from the original USB drive.
And now (by UEFI) there is no problem for licence or something like that.... so I'll wait a little bit more.

Let me reboot this computer at work. It has Windows 10 PRO installed and also Eset NOD32 Anti Virus 8. and I will come back and tell you if Eset is the problem or not.

Happy to report that ALL icons and settings are as they were before restarting. I even went into ESET and checked and I have ALL the checks enabled that was listed above (from Lio ), not just the one for suspicious applications.

Running ESET fully enabled. All is well and no change of icons. I have tried that one desktop app and seems to work well.

enable PUA and PUP detection (potentially unwanted applications and potentially unsafe applications ) and download for example ammyy from http://www.ammyy.com/AA_v3.exe if eset catch it select quarantine or delete and restart the system

Restarted just now. Icons all over on the left side and medium. Have not looked at folder view yet. Re-arranged icons to where they were before...somewhat.

I went to the control panel and looked at folder settings and view. They all looked (checked) as I had them before. So I clicked on the reset folders to same view and when I got back to the desktop, all my icons were moved back to the left after I had arranged them prior to re-setting the folders to default. I don't think setting folders to default is a good idea. It should not affect the desktop, but it appears that it views the desktop as another folder.

I couldn't resist clicking that link No need to reboot to see if it had triggered it. It had. Whipped out the Macrium flash drive and restored back to yesterdays image. Good fun.
