Stacking taskbar icons issue Windows 10

    Hey, all.

Is there a way to keep taskbar windows/icons stacked but not have to right click to open a new window? I have looked and not found anything for while.

I dislike having multiple windows of file explorer open and then going to open a new window but the already opened windows just show a preview when left clicking the file explorer and it does not open a new instance like it would if no other file explorers were open. I still want them stacked though. Cos having multiple tabs fill up the taskbar is atrocious and ruins work flow

I've probably misunderstood- if you simply want a new file explorer window, why not use Win key + E?

I did not know this was possible, but I'm not exclusively doing this with explorer. Same with Chrome (which offers tabs in the app, yes) or any other app. Like, if I wanted multiple JPGs open with GIMP or something

    You could
    - assign a hot key to shortcuts to the programs
    - use the search bar (would need to type part of the name)
    - have a dockable launchbar with full drag 'n drop support with your favourite shortcuts so it's 1 click to launch a program e.g. sTabLauncher (free)
    Download sTabLauncher 2.2.3.0
    really neat, configurable, categories

Then there's rt click Open With... for single files.

Chrome has its own hot keys.. e.g.

Assigning hotkeys and teaching myself to use them is probably the quickest then...

I'm trying to eliminate going out of the normal way to open a new window and the latter couple of options are exactly what I'm avoiding.

Is there no way to keep stacked windows and have the ability to open a new one when clicking the stack? Whatever app or tool it may be?

You can rt click the taskbar icon - even when there is a stack of mutiple instances then click the appropriate button to launch a new instance.

You can add tabs to File Explorer with this FREE app "QTTabBar" I use it on my system, it's pretty handy.

Yes. That is the issue. I don't like doing this 😂 Lazy me wants it to be quicker. I don't know why, but this small function frustrates me or has in the past and I am trying to find a way around that

Another option would be to have a simple script running- Autohotkey- 1 line per program- that assigns a hot key to launch that program. But you'd have to remember them as you said.

Visually, Stablauncher is easier. Docks and hides at the top- hover over to unhide it, click the icon.

Create the icons simply by dragging shortcuts to the programs onto it.
