How do I install a files and folders bckup? Windows 7 to Windows 10

    Goo day to you.

I am a noob when it comes to backup and restore. After many years and many iterations of Windows, I finally tried to backup my files and folders. They have been stored to an external HDD.

I ran into an issue with Win 10 that required a complete clean install of 7 and then upgrade to 10 again. The drive was completely cleaned.

Upon install, I can only see the backup I created after the new install.

From the backup drive, I can see many files when clicking on the drive to view content. The laptop has been renamed. How then can I restore the files from the old setup?

    Thank you... #GreenMountainBoyLOST :)

You will need a DVD that you created the first time you made the backup with all the system info stored, called a System Repair Disk.
This disk will be needed to start your PC and restore the backup

    Good luck

    Thank you for the feedback.

I might be missing something here, as I have no backup DVD. I was not prompted to create one for my files and folders.

Is it possible the following may work?

    Rename Tom to Dawn-PC
User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name - Windows 7 Help Forums

    1. Backup
    2. Create a new local admin user called TEMP
    3. Sign on as TEMP
    4. Rename user folder ACER to NICK
    5. Replace all references to ACER with NICK in registry. I had about 50 if I remember correctly.
    6. Edit configuration settings files in C:\Users\NICK\AppData\Local\Microsoft\SkyDrive\Settings\ and replace ACER with NICK where found.
    7. Reboot and sign on as NICK
    8. Delete all libraries from file explorer and then recreate default libraries (right click)
    9. Delete TEMP user.
    10. Delete and recreate all fingerprint data if you use it.

You may have to update default save locations etc depending what other software you have installed.

This worked for me - I renamed the generated id SALOU_000 on my machine with SALOUA and it works perfectly. Depending what software is installed you may have issues I did not though. If you aren't comfortable doing this you could just create a new user and delete the old one.

Hello Tom, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Since you are trying to restore files from a System Image, you could use the method in the tutorial below to do so if you like. :)

Thank you for the reply. I have now read through and have tried a few things but have not executed anything yet.

In post 4 you will see the first image of the TOSHIBA drive.
    I clicked here

    and found this

When I went through the process you pointed me to, I'm not seeing Files and Folders to install on this clean install. It appears to be a full image and looks nothing like what is shown in step 10

I did notice a folder in Toshiba drive listed as a .cal

This one is labeled files and folders. How does one view this?

It would be the file in your middle screenshot to attach in Disk Management in OPTION ONE. :)

    Here is what I see

In this image, on the left you see the Computer Management screen and on the right the image of This PC. The newly attached VHD. So not sure why Drive F is not present
