    Multiple Notepad files not cascading.

I use windows default notepad regularly for a variety of different reasons some of which are windows tips, tricks and fixes, creating .bat files, song lyrics, and of course just plain notes and even messages to myself. It has really just occurred to me that every notepad file I open sits directly on top of the previous file opened, I'm certain that they used to cascade.

I have tried resetting notepad by deleting the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Notepad registry entry numerous times. This works initially and all notepad files I open after deleting the registry entry cascade.... until I close one of the files, all files opened after that open in the the same place and on top of each other. The only way to determine which files I still have open and to select a file is to hover on the notepad icon on the taskbar. I have tried this on our "crash test dummy" (spare laptop) and the result is the same. Not a major problem I know, but annoying just the same.

I just opened 5 instances of Notepad, not tabs, and right-clicked the Taskbar then clicked Cascade windows, seems to work as designed.

Thanks Berton, yes, Clicking on cascade on the taskbar works, but yes, that makes all windows cascade. Otherwise, clicking on more than one notepad file should make them cascade as you open each one, the same as when you open more than one WINDOW. At least that is how I remember it worked previously.

When there are 2 or more instances of the same program open I get a 'shadow' on the right side of the Taskbar icon showing how many are open, hovering the mouse over that icon gives a pop-up of how many are open and some indication of the content of each.

Again, Thanks Berton, I also see the same thing and that is how I choose which file I want on top to use/edit. I'm thinking it's because the X and Y position of the notepad window is set in the registry entry. Like I said though, it's not a big problem it's just that it was easier to click between notepad title bars to switch between notepad files.

If your working with multiple files you could use Alt + Tab to quickly access a file.
