    Cannot type é using key combination ´+e (problem with diacritics)

    Hello there,

    I just found out that the dead keys on some of our computers do not work properly. Via osk the input does not work as well.

    I compared the settings with another one that is working just fine and tried it the same way.

    By typing ´ + e I still get "´e" instead of "é".

    The only difference I was able to find was the OS (which I am excluding - another one does not work as well) and some bloatware.

    I also tried with "German (Germany)" keyboard and language settings.

    Does someone know a way to enable / disable dead keys in keyboard settings or something like that? Could it be possible that some tasks can cause dead keys not to work?

    Settings / Specs - Working:
    OS: Win10 Pro - 2004 Build 19041.2
    Active Languages: German (Suisse), German (Germany), French (Suisse)
    Windows Display Language: German (Suisse)
    Region: Suisse
    Format: Use Windows Display Language
    Keyboard: German (Suisse), German (Germany), French (Suisse)

    Thanks in advance!

    I think your thread will suffer from use of the term 'Dead keys' because I have never seen that used to mean anything other than a key that does nothing when it is pressed.

    I suggest that you omit that term from your post.

    Since the title of a thread cannot be changed, I suggest that you create a new thread called something like, "Cannot type é using key combination AltGr+`+e"

    Then come back here and either delete this thread or post a link to your new one.

    I also suggest that you test some other key combination to make sure the AltGr key works - the € symbol often requires this [AltGr+4] so try that.
    I cannot be any direct help to you because I long ago abandoned use of AltGr key combinations to achieve accented characters [until I read your post, I did not know / had forgotten this method existed]. Instead, I use these shortcuts in Word & in Outlook Calendar, Emails, Contacts [Notes field only]
    Á á Ctrl' {on the @ key} then A/a {and the same for the other vowels}
    À à Ctrl` {on the top-left triple key} then A/a {and the same for the other vowels}
    Ç ç Ctrl, then C/c

    Ä ä Ctrl: then A/a
    Ö ö Ctrl: then O/o
    Ü ü Ctrl: then U/u
    ß Ctrl& then s

    I also keep those blocks of characters in an MS Outlook Note {because I always have Outlook open} and just copy from them in other applications.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

    Hello Denis,

    thank you for information. I was able to edit the title.

    Anyway.. I try not to use the AltGR combination. I'd like to use the diacritics on the keyboard itself.

    I just realized - the thread itself is still wrong.
    I will continue in another post.

    Look in https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/ or New posts and you'll see that the title others see in the indices has not changed.

    Many members peruse these indices for threads to respond to so might well not realise they have anything to contribute.

    It was you who mentioned the AltGr key. I thought I had merely forgotten how to use it this way.

    Hello there,

    after posting a thread with a misunderstandable title, here I am with a new one.

    I just found out that the diacritics / "dead keys" on some of our computers do not work properly. Via osk the input does not work as well.

    Hi, in my case, I can select UK, US or UKX (UK extended) keyboards.

    è only works with the last of these.
    I don't actually have a single quote key with the reverse slope, only '.

    What I do find helps a lot is a tiny free 3rd party program that allow you to press a letter, followed by a key of your choice to cycle through a set of possible characters for a given language.

    Thus e followed by F8 => é
    e F8 F8 => è

    e F8 F8 F8 => ê

    It provides sets for many languages, and you can create your own:

    -untitled.png

    Much more convenient and works anywhere.

    Please confirm
    1 On your other computers, you can use both the keyboard & the OnScreenkeyboard to get an é by pressing ` then e and in which applications {I always thought there was another key involved - the Ctrl key [rather than the AltGr key]}
    2 That diagram you posted is your keyboard
    3 Your keyboard region is set as Swiss and its physical appearance matches a Swiss layout.

    I can't get the CTRL option to generate accented keys- perhaps some other shortcut has overridden it.
    But ALTGr e => é
    for example.

    As far as I am aware, these shortcuts only work in Word & in Outlook Calendar, Emails, Contacts [Notes field only]
