Green ribbon and slow windows explorer

Every time I open windows explorer it locks up my whole PC for several minutes while it does *something* that involves a green status ribbon filling the address bar. If I leave it sitting on "This PC" it sometimes does it again and again.

I do not care what service Windows thinks it is providing with this status ribbon, I want to disable it so I can actually use my file browser on occasion.

Is there any possible way to make it stop doing this?

System is running Windows 10 Pro version 1903 with Windows Updates disabled.

    Hardware:

    Asus Z10pe-D16-WS
    2x Xeon E5-2643 v3s
    64gb RAM(2x 32gb)
    2x nVidia GTX 1070 ti

    Drives:
    C:\ 900gb SAS RAID5 array
    500GB M.2
    120gb SSD
    DVD RW
    8TB
    2TB

I have quite a lot of files. I'm fairly sure the stupid "ribbon" thing is somehow related to opening all 80,000 of them up to take a new thumbnail. I don't want it to do this. I don't need the thumbnails, just the names.

    Please help.

That seemed to help at first but after a few hours the ribbon is back with a vengeance. Badly slows down disk-reads, too. I was ripping a DVD in the background and it spiked badly when I tried to open explorer.

I hated this so much. My guess would be Explorer trying to find computers on the network.

    1. Fake method: Disable Network icon in Windows Explorer

Add or Remove Network from Navigation Pane in Windows 10

    2. Disable (un-check) network protocols for discovery of PCs on the network, if you are not on any.
Like Client for Microsoft Network, Link-Layer Topology Discovery, File and Printer (printer discovery)

    3. Temporarily disable Microsoft Defender, it caused a serious slow down on my computer.

    Just a note
Mine was due to a shared resource . That is I tried sharing my dvd on one computer with another.
I forgot to remove it after and without a dvd in the drive explorer would continue to look for it.

I'm suspecting my current woes might be somewhat related. I'm attempting to rip a UHD DVD(which for reason is happening at USB 1.1 speeds) so that may somehow be triggering the idle green ribbons.

What I'd like to figure out is what the heck its doing and how to make it not do that. On the surface Windows 10 explorer has 0 new features over the explorer from Windows 98, yet for some reason is slower, clunkier, and crashes constantly. The only explanation I can see is its trying to do a bunch of garbage in the background, and I'd really like it to just not.

    ouch.

At usb 1.0 speed is a major slowness for a uhd (Bluray?) disk. it might take hours to rip. Especially over a network connection.
That's not an experiment I really have time for.
If your trying to burn a disk I would suggest you use a third party burner like Nero or one of the free ones.
Explorer caches before burning which will take time.

The reason for my experiment was playing an old game SimCity 3000 on my laptop which didn't have a cd/dvd drive.
It required putting in a disk to confirm it was legit.
