Win10 v1909 - Run HLP files or How to Convert

HLP files got deprecated in Win7 but workarounds worked.
Win10 v1909 appears to eliminate the ability to execute (use) HLP files.
I have a number of older programs that have or use HLP files including some of M$ old programs.
One program in particular -- a book I use frequently for reference -- was created using HLP and it will now NOT run.

    QUESTIONS
    1) Anyone have a recent solution to this issue applicable to v1909 and hopefully later?
I have tried a number of workarounds for prior version but none appear to work.

    2) If HLP is in fact dead, anyone found a program (hopefully free) which will convert HLP files into some other
format such as CHM or PDF?

And if the program is old enough to be 16-bit there are issues with Win10 64-bit, might work on the 32-bit version.

    I found this:
How to Open .HLP WinHelp Files in Windows 10

They also have a YouTube video:
How to Open .HLP WinHelp Files in Windows 10 - YouTube

According to recent reviews on their site, it seems like it still works with the current version of Windows 10.

    Thanks all for responses.
As stated have tried a number of workarounds and am aware of "Help Explorer Viewer" (have not installed yet) as well as Try3s link for converting to CHM (lot effort versus simple program and some of the referenced links do not work). Was not aware of SourceForge and this would be preferable to a third party unknown EXE.

Will work though options and hope for best.

    HLP and CHM Converter

You can convert HLP and CHM files with the free online converter at CHM, HLP Viewer and Extractor.
It does an effective job of creating an RTF and HTML copy.

    Thanks.
For the old Office-97 HLP files it worked for a couple BUT failed on the Excel and Access HLP files for whatever reason.
Most interesting is one basically is getting extracted text strings NOT an Interactive help file (i.e. APP), so one would have to code/make such an App and then reference the extracted strings for easy reference. Doable, but a lot of work.

I have had some success decompiling .hlp files and recompiling as .chm.

The replacement format for help files is the compiled HTMLHelp format (CHM). The look and use of a .chm help file is almost identical to that of the older .hlp files. In fact, the project files (table of contents, images, text etc.) used to compile a .hlp file can easily be converted to a .chm project. From there it's an easy step to recompile the project in .chm format. Microsoft of course don't release the project files for their Help files, but these can be recreated by decompiling the .hlp file. A step-by-step guide including links to the (free) software required is here:

Thanks Bree: If I get some time this weekend I'll play with it. Was really hoping for a drop in solution as code time versus infrequent need comes into play here.
