The commoners will ask > "Linux? Distro? What are those?!!"

How many businesses will consider switching to a Linux distro let alone a different Office suite due to costs of employee and IT training alone, especially in the present condition of economies?

Even if a few Linux distros catch on, will they be free forever? I doubt that. Nor these free Office suites. Not unless one sells hardware along with like Apple, advertising involved such as the likes of Google's Android, or diversity such as MS. Don't forget their stores and services. All three have them to some extent.

No, personally I don't see it happening any time soon.

And oh! Don't forget the situations like the Munich fiasco.

. . .at least in my lifetime (living on borrowed time as it is) major governments, corporations, hospitals, etc., are not going to make the switch to Linux. Hell Apple hasn't been able to get folks to make the switch and they have a very smooth system that can run just about anything that Windows can. . .

Like others, I suspect that it is just politics as usual.

If "side A" introduces something, "side B" opposes it and once they get into power, they destroy it even if doing so violates their supposed principles.

It's just like our new Government.
They believe in profit above all other factors, yet they are fighting "tooth and nail" to destroy a department that actually makes money and this is despite their claims that the Government has no money.

    Intriguing topic Jimbo.

I too have thought about Microsoft Office for Linux and how that would make things very interesting.

If Microsoft can produce Office for Android, they can make Office for Linux.

I can't see it happening any time soon as Microsoft certainly won't want people abandoning Windows.

I'd love to be able to try Office 2013 on Linux just to see if the font rendering in Outlook and Word documents is as blurry as it is on Windows 8.1.

Those are all free alternative to MS Office but there is WordPerfect Office suite by Corel which can give MS Office run for it's money as far as quality is concerned.

. . .sorry Mike there just isn't. WordPerfect died twenty years ago, and the only thing going for them are a few U.S. government office that still use it. Microsoft Office is so imbedded that at the present time no one (not even the freebie) are capable of breaking their hold on the Office software.

€415 for Standard and €663 for Professional Edition? Are they INSANE?!

I'm tired of listening to people claim Linux is a Windows killer, with or without Office. Because guess what? Office already works on Linux perfectly. Office 365 has been offered for quite a while now and you can use it no matter which OS you're on. So where are all those people "just waiting to ditch Windows in favor of Linux"?

They are, in fact, more probably on OS X instead, if not still on Windows...

Hmm. It looks as though you are correct, but leans more towards online version via browser?

Linux Today - Office 365 on Mac and Linux

linux - Does Office 365 work properly on Ubuntu & Chrome OS? - Super User

    Here’s one that claims native?

    OS X? What’s that?

So those people using Linux that primarily wish for Office can now do so > Bye, bye, for this and 8F are looking more like a Linux forums more and more each day lately.
