Probably asked\answered - Better understanding of Windows
HI
I work a lot with Desk top and Win Servers in my role. However I am fundamentally lacking in " architecture" for want of a better word, knowledge
How do people learn about what goes on under the bonnet so to speak of Windows - for example you haver a program that is not working and you are at a loss? However someone knows that by changing the D Word or Values in the registry will allow this program to work, or they know where this program install files can be located within the registry
How can I improve my knowledge in this matter
Thank You in advance to anyone who replies currently use Win ver 1909

Agree on the "could have disastrous results" part, if playing in the Registry long enough one will at some point make a change that will kill the Windows installation.

Thank You for the information
I am comfortable with the registry and how to navigate and change values
What I want to I know more about is how peeps know “ where to look” in order to change these values or even delete the dll that is causing the problem ... where are the most common places to start an investigation, what tools of any can help ( thanks by the way for the links above)
I suppose a staring point ?

A Registry monitoring program, is probably the easiest way to learn what gets changed when you do something in Windows.
After that it's just memory and good records keeping.

The bottom line is, it depends on the app or program and what is not working about it. Many times, just reinstalling it, or updating the app to the newest version fixes most problems. Other then that, Googling the specific Error message will give you the results on how to fix it. Each app or program has many entries in the Registry, so you have to know the specific error to know which Registry edit to make for the desired results. There is no one size fits all fix in the Registry.
