Why does Windows 10 recommend so much hardware

Hi folks

I'm at a loss to understand why these days Windows 10 always recommends so much hardware --even on a moderate laptop (I'm addressing this to typical users not Gamers / extreme developers etc). Ms has improved the performance of the OS hugely in recent releases (assuming you can get them installed in the first place !!!!!).

I find for example even on A Virtual machine I have a very decent performing W10 X-64 Workstation edition running - system allocated to 2GB RAM VHD 80GB of which 45 GB is currently allocated, Office 2019 Pro suites including Project 2019, Photoshop CS6, SAP GUI, Video hardware capture device, Filezilla, WAMP system, OPENSSH and a whole slew of Stock trading applications.

Not a squeak of problem with performance. If using VMWare you can get a load better performance BTW if even when its on a "Normal SSD" specify the Virtual hard drive as an NVMe device when creating / installing the VM. VMWare seems to have improved the virtual NVME drivers no end !!!!

Here's even 2 sessions going on to a SAP system -- not the "smallest" application !!! without issue here From Windows 10 running as a VM on VMWare workstation rel 16 hosted by Linux Arch kernel 5.9.10.



Laptop is an older HP envy laptop (I5 processor) with 8GB RAM and Intel graphics and CPU.

OK gaming etc where people need highly specialized GPU's etc - that's another issue but for typical "Officy" type work I'm sure requirements are grossly overspecified.

More memory etc is never a bad idea -- especially if you want to run a load of VM's concurrently but with even moderatly OK hardware Windows can run on a surprisingly small amount of it !!!!!

Don't buy a mega expensive laptop / desktop if you basically are just running essentially "Bog standard Windows" - but do have the OS on an SSD of course.

I mention this because it's "Black Friday time" and some might be tempted to go out and buy a mega new expensive laptop - when you probably don't really need it.

Remember when 10 first came out. It was a lean mean fighting machine (a la the movie Stripes). That's because MS stripped the OS. Althoughs nice and rich features of window 7 stripped away in 10, set to run in minimal hardware. Fast forward to now...well MS seems to be adding stuff back and made it power hungry again.

Just install basic Windows - forget about any apps from the store - install independently .

Windows 10 can be decently "lean and Mean" (and here;s a Linux user saying that !!!!!!). Mind you I'm using Windows Workstation edition which might be more geared for corporate / enterprise use than Windows Home edition -- I don't know because unlike the Linux kernel its not usually possible for Windows users to dig in to the Windows kernel (propretary OS).
