Random Freezes & Lockups. SSD Issue??

    Hi folks

In February this year, I bought a new 250GB SSD and a copy of Win 10 Pro.

This was installed on the new drive. Version 2004 Build 19037.630

Since then I've had random freezes and lockups - usually (almost exclusively I must say) whilst surfing the web using Google Chrome (version 87.0.4280.66) and also since updating a couple of days ago to 20H2 Build 19042.630.

Is it a Chrome issue do you think??

The pc will also (randomly) wake from sleep - sometimes several times in a day, sometimes it doesn't do this for a week or more and behaves 'as expected'.

I thought it was Ver. 2004 being a bit flaky, now I'm not so sure.

I'm wondering if the SSD is okay. This is nothing to do with Chrome (obviously) but I don't know why the pc is waking after a random period of time (and yes, 'fast boot' is disabled).

How can I test it - what programs etc can I run? I've run error checking and it found nothing. Similarly sfc/scannow has found nothing amiss with Windows previously although I've just run it again and it says it has repaired some corrupted files.

The command 'wmic diskdrive get model, status' says everything is okay.

Similarly there's nothing of any concern shown in Crystal Disk Info (see pic below)

I've run the WD Digital Dashboard and the S.M.A.R.T Short Diagnostic test and everthing came back fine.

Just running the longer, more detailed test now.

    So, any further ideas??

    @ArthurDent hello ,

It's most likely not your SSD.

"fast boot" and "fast startup" are two different things. One is BIOS and one is Windows.

Try disabling Wake Up Timers: Why Does My Windows Computer Keep Waking up From Sleep Mode? and run "powercfg/lastwake" to see what last woke it up when this happens.

Download an run HD Sentinel app to get a second opinion on your SSD. Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring

    Hi Steve

The Advanced Power Settings had 'Allow Wake Timers' enabled - now disabled thank you.

As regards third-party confirmation of my SSD's health, I've downloaded and run both CrystalDisk Info and WD's own Digital Dashboard and both agree that the SSD is fine. Just typing this reply before running the longer and more detailed S.M.A.R.T disgnostic from the WD suite.

The drive is suspect, especially if you keep getting a report of corrupt files from SFC after every update.
Also, be on the look out for Windows having major lag that you don't normally see. Had this with system-number-two, when using a PNY CS900 500 GB SSD! Avoid PNY CS900 SSDs!

Okay, do let us know if it's fixed or not after a few days of testing. Thank you

Run sfc and dism again now and let us know if they are both clean or not.

Bit in red: Curious as to why you think the drive is suspect. Could you explain your reasoning please?

Bit in blue: I'm not aware that I either said this nor implied it. It is certainly NOT the case.

Bit in green: Not aware of any lag, just the occasional lockup!!

IIRC, SFC would fail the system after an update, more than once!

Then I saw Crystal Disk Info results that looked bad. (I think it was SMART reporting bad sectors)

    And this sadly, includes lock-ups.

@ArthurDent, if you're confused by this response, so am I. Everything looks fine to me.
