    File explorer custom searching

In the search box in file explorer you can type date: or datemodified or size and you're supposed to get a GUI / calendar where you can specify dates, size etc...

I get nothing...I cannot bring up anything of the modifiers. If i search for a word or a *.* I get results but I cannot get a date or date modified or any other query modifier to come up.

The calendar disappeared as part of MS changing Windows search after build 1903.

If you have the ribbon displayed when you click in the search box you should see supporting options.

Otherwise, you can type the search syntax yourself, but after build 1903 correct syntax is not longer helpfully highlighted in blue.

    e.g.
    type:mp3 datecreated:20/1/18 .. 1/11/18

    @dalchina

That extremely stroppy poster in that other thread has misled you. He posted the same garbage in several TenForums threads.

All that change does is turn off UAC completely. I told him this at the time.

It has no effect on File explorer search at all.

I have checked this by doing this change as an experiment even though I knew what would happen. [And then set it back to how it was before]

Thanks, that's just one element of what I posted though.

Does this have any relevance now? (MajorGeeks)
Search in File Explorer in Windows 10

That said, I'm rather dubious about trying to reverse changes MS is clearly determined to make.

    dalchina,

That HTG link in Search in File Explorer in Windows 10 is not actually about this OP's particular question [it's about another part of the changes that have been made] so I think you can safely remove all of your quote section.

    All the best,

    Chris,

I have never seen any method of getting back the old dropdown bits of UI that File explorer search used to have. It's a shame.

Along with many others, I now use a third-party search utility for anything complicated. There are lots available.

    I chose NirSoft's SearchMyFiles

    All the best,

I use "Everything" from VoidTools , very fast . Haven't use widows search since.

As this will now deteriorate as usual into another comparison of 3rd part search tools rather than attempting to answer the question, I'm out.

    Chris,

I think dalchina answered the question in the very first reply.

Yes, this does happen an awful lot. I thought I ought to name one because I had mentioned the subject but it is like showing a red rag to a bull here.

You can access the 'Calendar' from the Details header, if you know the date in question...
