File Explorer Not Functioning - Green Loading Forever

Lots of computers on our domain reporting File Explorer not functioning at ALL. Sits with the Green Loading Bar, and returns nothing.

Done all normal troubleshooting (Reset FE settings, Index settings, SFC, etc...) . Issues can be persistent or intermittent depending on device. No consistency.

    Update applied was KB4586781

    Help

    KB4586781 CU Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.630 and v20H2 19042.630

That seems to mean you're either using 2004 or 20H2. Which?

Do you experience the same in Safe Mode?

And what happens if you uninstall the update?

    Sorry, missed that.

    2004 & 20H2

Have not uninstalled Update yet. Still gathering some data on suspect devices. Lots of remote clients so nothing on our bench to test with.

Noticing that Indexing Options are broken on most of these devices, as well.

Thanks. The comments following the News article on that update don't reflect those problems, so it's not universal.

Is it known if search indexing was functional before the update?

As far as I know, yes. :)

I have a colleague who is testing this theory on a couple devices this evening. Will hopefully return results to help us all

Thanks for taking a peek at this.

Does Reliability History give any entries relevant to the problem?
    Have you tried---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth---?

You mention Windows search too: consider this case which the poster solved:

    Another possible idea:
Fix Windows folder unresponsive/slow behavior, green loading bar

If you want to see what's actually happening as that progress bar progresses, you can capture ALL activity (from registry access upwards) using Procmon (Process Monitor) free from MS, but I'd guess it's more likely to be a peculiarity of explorer vs configuration.

You get a long text list of activity; lots of very technical filters to focus on particular aspects.
