    task manager won't display

    W10 v2004/OS build 19041.630

Hi all. For whatever reason, I have been encountering a rolling series of problems. It started with my mouse freezing and getting "jumpy," task manager not displaying (it "opens" minimized in the task bar but won't display), the start menu not displaying, an inability to restore my computer to an earlier restore point and, as of this afternoon (worked fine in the morning), my Rivet Networks ethernet device stopped working (device I attach to shows I'm getting a signal). I have since resolved the start menu issue, but nothing else. Let me start here with task manager.

I usually have opened it via control-alt-delete, but have since learned control-shift-escape is more direct. I had it open and was actively using it around noon yesterday. Suddenly, it stopped displaying. It just sits in the task bar minimized. If I scroll over it, it shows it open, etc., but it won't display at all. I've tried multiple paths to open it, but the result is the same as described above.

I tried creating a new user account and was able to access it with no problem, but can't open it on my main administrator account. Suggestions? Thanks!

That suggests that your "original" account profile is corrupted.

One of the fixes for it is just what you've started...create a new profile.

Copy the folder contents from your original account to the new account.

Thanks, ONG. How do you copy the entire user profile/configuration? I'd hate to have to try to start over again.

Edit: check that. I didn't read far enough down the page!

    @Kens

As for the Task Manager issue, that's due to the 19041.630 update.

Just click on "More details" at bottom left to fix that.

If you like, you can merge this .reg file to get you back to a working Task Manager. It has my cosmetic and functional tweaks, but they are easily changed. It'll save you the initial setup. Just download the Zip file and extract the .reg and run/merge it. You should not have to sign off and back on. Just make sure Task Manager is not running when you do the .reg merge.

@Kens Opening post "my Rivet Networks ethernet device stopped working"
    --- Is it working now?

Are you still unable to get into Task Manager?

Can you tun sfc /scannow using either Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Run as administrator)
--- If so let us know what it reports

This sounds like it is windowed offscreen. To test, with Task Manager running, click the Taskbar icon so it has the focus. Press Alt+Spacebar, X (Maximize form the Applicaiton Menu). If the program appears, use Alt+ Spacebar, R to Restore it offscreen, then Alt+ Spacebar, M (Move) then use the arrow keys to move the window back to within the borders of the screen.

You might want to try the keyboard shortcuts on a visible app first.
