    Help restore normal start menu

Just upgraded to v2004 build 19041.610
My start menu is not functioning correctly. Troubleshooter pdf with errors attached.

    strtmenuprobs.pdf

I can't get rid of the front pane which obscures the program list. I can drag it up a bit, but then the front pane will cover it again.
I do remember way back when that I did some reg tweaks to emulate the aero theme from win7 and some tweaks to cortana, but cannot find the backup .reg file, duh! However, it was working fine until the 2004 upgrade.
I ran the start menu troubleshooter and attached the pdf of the problems it found but can't correct. Any advice greatly appreciated.
    Thx

Had a similar issue and was solved by a System Restore.

Thx I was thinking of doing a system restore, but I would think this would resurface if and when I am forced to update to 2004. I was also thinking of doing a windows "refresh", but not sure if that will reset the registry to where it should be or not. Apparently some of the minor tweaks I may have done are not playing nicely with v2004.

That's your Search window overlaying the Start Menu (the little Magnifying Glass next to the Start Menu icon). Click on it and see what happens.

Have you applied any tweaks in that area?

Thx Rich, I may have done some 'search' reg tweaks, but it was so long ago I don't recall, and can't find my backup reg. Oh well, for the time being, I reverted back to the prior build and the search and menu are working ok with the older build.

I will have to research the errors found by the troubleshooter on both builds...
"Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost" and "Microsoft.Windows.Cortana" applications need to be installed correctly."

    and

"The current user needs to have permissions to access the following registry key: HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DeviceAccess\Global"

This is found on both builds.

    thx again.

I finally discovered the registry flaw which I had done previously. When I upgraded to the new 20h2, the search menu would always overlay the start menu and I could not see the underlying start menu items as in the pics above. Long ago, I edited registry to Enable Hidden Secret Immersive Search Bar. After months of research, finally found another post about this and I undid it.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search Set "ImmersiveSearch" dword back to 0 and all is well again.....
    Cheers, DSA
