    How to Search in File Explorer in Windows 10 WITHOUT subfolders

    My Windows 10 Explorer does not behave as expected. (Windows 10 Version 2004)

    A search in File Explorer in Windows 10 always shows files of subfolders even if I click on 'Current folders'.

    The German Microsoft support could not help in a long telephone call.

    I ran "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" as admin. No problems were found.

    Does anyone have a clue?

    If the name of the folder you're searching is distinct from any subfolders, you can add the criteria:
    FolderName:="ActualFolderName".

    Otherwise, you can add a match to the fully-qualifiedd path with:
    FolderPath:="C:\Users\keith\Documents"

    Thank you for your answer.
    Unfortunately that does not solve my problem.

    Problem: A search in File Explorer in Windows 10 always shows files of subfolders even if I click on 'Current folders'.

    Without search the folder looks like this:

    A search with activated [Current folder] brings the following result.

    I expect the search NOT to behave like this. The result should be as without search, as the current folder DOES NOT contain any file with "DxO" as part of the name.

    Hi, if you mean that you see the folders containing found files and don't expect to see those folders listed, I can confirm that's how search behaved in build 1903.

    After that MS first made a mess of it, sort of fixed it and kept changing search.

    OK. You have to:
    1. Execute a search via the Search bar so the Search Ribbon appears.
    2. On the ribbon, click Current Location.
    3. Click the "Go" arrow to the right of the Search bar.
    4. On the ribbon, click Current Location again.

    In the command line it would be much simpler:
    dir /b YourFolder

    If you would like to include the subfolders just add the /s switch.

    Hi Keith, thank you for your help. It realy works this way.

    You are right, this is a complete mess, even in Version 2004.

    Your workaround is brilliant. Thanks for it.

    I can't be bothered with Windows search, I use Agent Ransack instead. Also no fan at all of the ribbon, that got disabled a long time ago

    I was just going to suggest Agent Ransack as well, best search engine ever. I've used it for years.
    It's the first thing I install when I set up a new computer.

    It's so commonly the case that threads about Windows search get diverted to a lengthy review of the various merits of 3rd party search tools. Such a discussion rarely helps to provide a useful answer to the original question posed.
