OneDrive Personal Vault need help cannot get fix the sync issues

    HI Guys
This is a great written tutorial but does not match my issues.
I have for some reason on one of my Pc's constant error about not opening my Persoanl Vault things are not synced, this is crap.
I only have 3 small files to test it but even had it open all day it keeps saying it needs openeing.
All my other PC's do not even show it but it is setup on them. I have tried removing from folder sync but that is not allowed.
I cannot get rid of it i have tried removing files adding them back but same error.

I like the idea but Onedrive really just seems to struggle with syncing.
Any ideas how to sort this personal fault issue out? PLEASE

I'm seeing this on a Reddit thread:

    "OneDrive engineer here.

What that means is that your Vault got locked, but there are files in the Vault that did not finish syncing to the cloud.

    To fix:

Unlock your Personal Vault on your Windows PC.
Allow the files to finish syncing and uploading. Then lock the Vault.
If there are files in error after unlocking your Vault, resolve those errors first.

(You can temporarily move the files out of OneDrive as a last resort, then copy them back in.)"

But apparently that's not working for everyone:

Um just got this error after updating to build 18362.387 (windows 10 1903) and I keep getting this DUMB error. Yes , my files are synced but it doesnt like that the vault is locked. this is really annoying!

Same issue here. I don't have that many files in my vault. I unlock it and verify that they are up to date. As soon as the vault locks again, onedrive spits this red error out EVERY TIME."

I tried Personal Vault, but Disabled It after I soon realized it had a 3 file limit without a subscription to '365'.

    Disabled via that Tutorial Link?

If you haven't already, and worth a shot, start and stop OneDrive and/ or Restart the computer.

I'm just a user of OneDrive so consider the source.. ;o)

    Hmm...

And you removed the files first from PV then Disabled it Online you said.

    Hmm.

There's this '/reset' switch you can run:

According to this support page below, if you get that 'Can not find...' message to use the code below

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...0-84905399050c
    Code:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
However I don't see that directory on my machine, but it might be that your OneDrive is part of 'Office 365' and installed differently.

As I look back at my Personal Vault experience that I later backed out, when I chose to try the Personal Vault, it reinstalled OneDrive under C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive

New OneDrive behavior after Personal Vault Setup

    ***** more detail if you're interested ****

"Afterwards I found the OneDrive.exe program that had been under:

    C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe

...had been removed and installed in a newly created folder 'Microsoft OneDrive' under Program Files (x86)

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\OneDrive.exe

I only found this out when my pinned task bar icon became obsolete because it pointed to the %localappdata% ."

Worth adding, I found that this Personal Vault reinstall uses an '/allusers' switch moving the installs out of the AppDataLocal structures of each logon to Program Files (x86).

    More about that here:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/one...e-installation

By default, the OneDrive sync app installs per user, meaning OneDrive.exe needs to be installed for each user account on the PC under the %localappdata% folder. With the new per-machine installation option, you can install OneDrive under the "Program Files (x86)" or "Program Files" directory (depending on the OS architecture), meaning all profiles on the computer will use the same OneDrive.exe binary. Other than where the sync app is installed, the behavior is the same.
The new per-machine sync app provides:

    • Automatic transitioning from the previous OneDrive for Business sync app (Groove.exe)
    • Automatic conversion from per-user to per-machine
    • Automatic updates when a new version is available

The per-machine sync app supports syncing OneDrive and SharePoint files in Microsoft 365 and in SharePoint Server 2019.

I had this issue; turned out to be illegal characters in filenames

(I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd necro-post in case my solution is helpful for others stumbling across it.)

I had the same problem with the constant "Personal Vault" sync issues. Turned out it was caused by illegal characters in filenames -- not just in the vault, but anywhere in my OneDrive space.

Due to Microsoft's bizarre cloud filing system, these characters -- that are quite acceptable in Windows -- are illegal on OneDrive or Sharepoint:
    • tilde ('~')
    • hash/pound ('#')
    • percent ('%')
    • ampersand ('&')
    • any name starting '~$'

To play safe, I also removed any commas (',').

Windows 10 had quite happily let me copy files to OneDrive that broke these rules, so it took a lot of search-and-replace to sort this out. Once I did, the error went away.
