My church's Thrift Store burned because of an exploding laptop battery that was left to charge overnight. I have the security camera footage to prove it.
Pretty impressive and scary. Needless to say I unplug my laptop AC adapter from the wall now days. Plug it in when I want to use it, then power off and unplug it when done.

Somewhat annoying but after seeing how fast the computer repair room went up (less than 15 minutes from the first explosion to being totally engulfed) it's a minor irritant.
I keep advising people on fire safety here (post 28)!

All of my laptops are left plugged in. Why? Because I elect to. I do have a Mac Book Pro from 2011, that is plugged in all the time too. I have kept the MAC OS updated too, just b/c. Leaving them plugged in has NOT been detrimental.

    I'm due for a new DELL 14" w 11th Generation Intel Core.

It's never detrimental until a battery explodes and causes a fire just sayin ...

Likelihood of it happening is extremely small, but it's not 0.

After having gone through it I don't want to do so again so I take the safe path.

Whoah, lots of scary stories here.

Would it matter if you left it to charge and let it keep charging at a 100 for a few hours? Is this more typical in cases where the charger was left plugged in for a very long time after the battery finished charging?
I could imagine a shop just leaving their laptop plugged in permanently @Ztruker

Many/most people leave the power adapter plugged into the A/C and the laptop all the time. I know that's how I did it for 4 laptops over 15+ years and never a concern until we had the fire at the thrift store. Once I watched the security recordings I changed my mind and opted for a safer method.

Here are the videos. 5.5 minutes from start to fully involved. One zip with 3 mp4 files.

    Woah.

Now that I think of it, one of my relative's laptop stays plugged in at all times at his repair garage.

Another tip - don't leave a rag soaked with linseed oil in the open air in a garage!

Linseed oil is used to seal wood and rags soaked in it can spontaneously ignite - see https://www.esfrs.org/black-museum/a...f-linseed-oil/

I have family in Bermuda whose garage burned down due to this during one hot summer.
