Windows 10 computer randomly freezes on idle

    Greetings!

I have an Acer Aspire E15-576 running Windows 10 2004 (Build OS 19041.508), and I have been having random freezes for the past several weeks. Whenever I leave the computer on idle for several minutes or hours, sometimes my screen would be completely black with no response from using the keyboard or mouse with the Power LED still on, and I couldn't get it into sleep mode through closing the led when this happens. This forces me to do a hard reset to the machine functioning properly again. I couldn't get it into sleep mode through closing the led when this happens. This doesn't happen every time but it happens at least once or twice every two days.

I was wondering if my computer was trying to defrag a corrupt file that could be causing the freezes, so I disabled automatic defragging, but the issue still occurs.

Any possible solutions? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. First job is run a full disk check as if you power off it can corrupt the disk. Then manualy run defrag let it run see if it works or has a problem

See if Device Manager has any flags.
Also Reliability History for any and if so,"view tech details" should give you searchable data in lines 1 and 2.
In the search box.type in---dxdiag---and check all pages.
In the Display page, right hand side, the display adapter driver details are given.Note them down and visit the maker's site ONLY and if there is a later version, then download it.
If you can, download Display Driver Un installer [DDU],run it in Safe Mode to remove all traces of the old driver, then install the new one.
If that does not fix it,then run---sfc /scannow---and---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth---to replace any corrupt files.

Alright, I managed to use sfc /scannow in command prompt (as administrator) and it stated it found and fixed corrupted system files in Windows. Since then (2 days ago), the freezing hasn't happened, so far. Hopefully, it stays that way. Before, I tried uninstalling a few newer programs, did a disk check, defragging and optimizing my storage drives, and making the computer never sleep, checking for updated drivers, but my computer still froze on idle. While I still don't know exactly what caused this issue to begin with, System File Checker most likely solved the issue. Thanks, Samuria, and especially joeandmarg0 for the assistance!

Nope. Unfortunately, the laptop is still freezing on idle. However, after testing this issue only happens when the display is turned off. So as a temporary solution, I set "Display turn off" to Never in the Power Options. The thing is that this issue didn't used to happen before mid-September, even with the display off. Hopefully, there is a permanent fix for this issue.

Check for video and other driver updates including bios from PC manufacturer.

I would also turn hibernation off using "powercfg -h off" from elevated powershell or command prompt.

I checked Acer's website and it doesn't appear to have any new updates for the laptop and Intel Driver Updater program recommended using the current driver even though there are newer drivers for Intel. I already have hibernation turned off before this issue happened.

Thanks for the update. Interesting that Intel suggest keeping current drivers. Can you post a screenshot of that?

What's the output of "powercfg /a" from admin powershell or command prompt?

My Dell shows the same "powercfg /a" output and sleeps fine.

Check your PC/mobo manufacturer site for new drivers if not already done as I've seen similar messages from Intel Driver check.
