Clicking on search box used to open timeline - not anymore

When i click on the windows search box (next to the start button) it opens up a box, but it does not display my latest documents, webpages etc. It only shows the most popular apps.
It used to display a timeline with most recent items.
I haven't actively disabled anything so i must asume that either something is broken or that this feature has been discontinued in v. 2004?

This seems a change by MS, which has been making changes to search in 1909 and 2004. See also:

Recent files list stopped showing in the search window (Ver 2004)

    Thanks @dalchina.
I'll be reading that thread and the links posted by you and Paul Black.

One thing that i immediately can see though is that the box that pops up when i click on the search field is completely blank in the lower part, i.e. i don't see the "recent" and "quick searches" collumns that you have and the thread starter had.

Maybe this is tied to cortana which i have disabled/not available in my country?

From your screenshot: 3 dots -> search settings -> history (is it enabled/on?)

Yes, search history is enabled (has never been turned off).

This is an article pre-2004 release which shows the format I now have as well:
A Closer Look at Quick Searches in Windows 10 20H1

I don't know if this offers a clue:
Keep in mind that for this feature you need the search tool in Windows 10 to have Internet access. Full search settings are available under:

    Windows 10 > Settings > Search

I have both Cortana and web search results disabled (from Windows search results) and I'm seeing history in my search window (Win+S) for both files, apps, and folder using 19041.508.

Try running the Windows Search Troubleshooter and see if it helps.

I checked the settings - everything is enabled.

Did that but it did not resolve the issue.

Interestingly, if i click on the taskview button (next to the search bar) it shows the timeline in the bottom half with most recent documents.

Try a different account on your PC to see if it works there.
