Hi everybody I am about to migrate my i5 Win7 system to a new due-here-this-week i7 W10 machine. So far this site is grilling me about system details for a system that I have never seen or touched, and this post, but not letting me ask questions.

I've searched the tutorial index for "migrate from w7 machine to different w10 machine" and gotten no hits. I broadened the search to just "migrate" and got some hits, which seemed to be about migrating from 7 to 10 on the same machine.

But the forum is not allowing me to post questions, not sure why- been a member for a couple of years and longer than that on Seven Forum.

Still, rules are rules, even when they don't seem to make any sense to me. Fair enough. Can someone please give me a link to a forum where questions are allowed? Thanks.

Welcome to Ten Forums HoggyDog. We are happy to answer your questions here and I see that you already are getting answers. The nag about updating your computer specs is so that we don't have to ask for every question you raise.

    Hello!

Greetings to all! I'm new here and I'm glad to be here. I have used this forum for years, but only as a guest. Today I decided to register and be part of this team. I learned a lot here thanks to a genius like Brink. I am 47 years old and I still play games on my old computer. I hope for good company. Cheers!

There aren't any rules I know of that will prevent any member of TenForums from posting to any forum here, HoggyDog. Go through your profile and see if you can figure out what went wrong.

Just a question or three . . . are you intending to keep your Windows 7 machine, and if so, are you planning to upgrade it to Windows 10? If your answers are yes and yes (for simplicity), then I'd post that machine's specs under MyComputer. You'll have room to add your new computer's specs when you get it. Finally, are we talking laptop to laptop, desktop to desktop or one of each?

As to your new computer, which already has Windows 10, all you'll need to do is update to the latest version of W10 through Windows Update & Security. And yeah, there's a learning curve; large or small, according to your technical knowledge.

So, I'm sure there are multiple programs/apps you want to move over, as well as data, pictures, music, etc. This can be done manually ... reinstall all the programs/apps and move your data to the new system through a USB drive or a larger external drive.

Most of the folks here use Macrium Reflect (free or paid version). Free is adequate for a "normal" PC. I'd suggest that you back up both the new and old PC before beginning your transfer. A 2 or 3 TB external will work for the backup; you can then restore your files to your new PC.

Hi everybody, I've been using this forum for about 2 months now but I was only browsing as a guest. I've been reading Brink's tutorials for a while now and some of the posts in the forum. I really like this website and wanted to be a part of it. Thanks to everybody who has kept this website up and running.
