Change where new content is stored

I have a new machine, one of the first things i do is change the location to where new documents etc are stored. I do this to stop crud on my c drive. I have two older machines that operate the same way.

I made the changes on this new system is new documents will be stored to in this case D:\ didn't think about it or check.
I know i made the changes correctly and clicked on the apply button that appears.

I noticed that a program i installed did not save the corresponding documents to my new location of D;\Documents like my other systems. they get stored under Users\username\Documents.

Checking the actual D drive the folder named Documents does not exist as it does on my other machines.

Never had this issue before and I cant find a way to fix this or find any resources to help.

hoping someone can help me to fix this. the windows version i have is 2004 Home edition.

    Thanks

is change the location to where new documents
Hi, how do you do that? Do you use the Location tab?

I noticed that a program i installed did not save the corresponding documents to my new location of D;\Documents like my other systems. they get stored under Users\username\Documents.
Note that if the program is written such that the path is hard coded rather than respecting the system change, then that's how it will work.

A good number of programs, when installed, create folders in the default libraries. Quite what the impact of that is on the program if the Location tab is used after installation, or before installation may be uncertain.

Is the program a traditional 'desktop' program (exe/dll's) or from the Store? (A UWP app)

    - note also the warning to turn off Onedrive if used beforehand.
    - and at (7) the option to move files

as i said i have done this with my older machines and never had a problem. I am reinstalling the same programs so nothing my end has changed. to make the changes i go to windows key+I then select system and then under storage i make the changes.

Since i have done this same process for the last five years on other machines and reinstalling the same programs on the new machine they should work the same way.

The other machines running win version 2004 but they have been updated from older versions.

I wonder if the problem is cause from a fresh install of win version 2004. anyone with a fresh install of 2004 have the same problem?

    Thanks

What path is shown in the Registry at
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
    for the entry
    Personal
as this should point to the new location
    D:\Documents

I never do this change using Settings, System, Storage but by using the Properties, Location tab of each user folder [Documents, Music, ...] with the Registry method used to correct things if it all starts to go wrong.

I'm glad it is now all alright.

dalchina gave you a link to the relevant tutorial
Move Your Documents Folder Location - TenForumsTutorial
    - In its list of Related tutorials at the end, you'll find corresponding guides for relocating many other user folders.

    Take a screenshot- TenForumsTutorials
I cannot find a tutorial for relocating the Screenshots folder but it follows the same pattern.
    - It's also in the Registry, User shell folders but with an awkward label {B7BEDE81-DF94-4682-A7D8-57A52620B86F}
Change where new content is stored-registry-screenshots-entry.png
    - The Screenshots folder & its Registry entry are only created when you first use the Screenshots facility.

I generally use the Properties, Location tab method to relocate user folders.
    - I always create the desired [target] folder beforehand and move my files there myself before doing the relocation. Letting Windows move the files only went wrong once for me but I still take this cautious approach.
    - I save the direct Registry-editing method to help me out if I have made a mess of things.
    - If I am using the Registry-editing method, I create the desired folder in File explorer, copy the full path from File explorer's address bar and paste that into the relevant Registry entry.
    - Copying & pasting avoids typos
    - If you were to tell the Registry to use a non-existent folder then any existing problem would be made much, much more complex to resolve.

Lots of people post in TenForums about problems caused by mistakes made whilst relocating user folders which is why the tutorials advise you to make a system image beforehand.

    All the best,
    Denis

Let me suggest to relocate C:\users to D:\users.
When done, not only the data folders from one user is relocated but ALL data related from ALL users will be on D: .

    What would be the benefit?
Would Repair installs, Cumulative updates & Version updates run correctly?

    I see many benefits.
    - C: drive only has the OS and D: only has data.
    - OS drive can be small (my M.2 is 128 G and has Win and Linux)
    - You can do a clean install deleting the partitions. Data is safe on another drive (D:)
    - You have AppData on D:\Users\Name\AppData (User temp folder is on it)
    - Never had a problem with upgrades and updates.
