    missing files windows 10 home

Hi All, new to forum so apologies if I have the wrong option,
I am running windows 10 home on an acer aspire laptop, I have customised all my file icons for easy access,
this morning when switching on I notice I have the standard windows folders, when going into my icons folder I find it empty, I also have 4 spreadsheets using libre office, they are all missing, just an empty folder, lucky I have them backed up elsewhere, there are a number of folders like this, I have tried a system restore to 2 weeks ago, my last restore point but they are still the same empty folders,, I have looked at my windows updates and I have 4 over the last 5 days,
can anybosy help me recover my lost files and icons and can I safely delete these last updates?
all help and advice appreciatedmissing files windows 10 home-capture.png

Welcome to tenforums. That seems an odd combination of events.

The forum prompted to to specify your full build number so we don't have to keep asking.....?

    a. System Restore has no effect on user data. It does not protect it in any way.
    b. Those 4 updates are simply AV updates, not Windows updates, and again should not be responsible for what you're seeing.

Please run a routine check on your disk: I don't know if it's a SSD or HDD- no specs.
    Crystal Diskinfo (free).
    If ok, please run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt and report the summary result.
    If ok, similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

Please check that you are logged in to your normal account: e.g. open Documents in file explorer, click on the address bar and check the path is as you expect.

A program such as Recuva (free) can scan for deleted files and recover them, but if they are on C: and you've been using the PC, the space on disk they occupy may well have been overwritten.

What is the path to the missing files?
Have you relocated any relevant library folders? (rt click, Properties, Location tab)
    Do you use Onedrive?

thank you dalchina, I have run both chkdsk c: /scan and SF C /SCANNOW although scannow didn't show any results, I have also run recova but nothing found. my drive is a Samsung 860 EVO 1 TB SATA 2.5 Inch Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) that I placed in the laptop at the beginning of June last, still cannot find a lot of the files although all my pictures are safe and the spreadsheets were backed up so I have recovered them,
"What is the path to the missing files? - C:\Users\<my name>\Desktop<my name>1 docs
Have you relocated any relevant library folders? (rt click, Properties, Location tab) - no
Do you use Onedrive? - no"
have just run chkdsk c: /scan again as I try to copy the files but as soon as the scan finishes it disapears

    Should end up like this:
    missing files windows 10 home-1.png

    SF C /SCANNOW - scannow didn't show any results
Also strange. Did you use the correct syntax?

    SFC /SCANNOW

Your full windows build number can be seen by Win key + r, winver

    C:\Users\<my name>\Desktop<my name>1 docs
    - do you mean the missing files were in a folder
    <my name>1 docs or perhaps <my name>1
    on the desktop?

    Please download, install and run
Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) - SSDs too and post a screenshot of its GUI showing the comment about your disk thus:

right clicking each of the spreadsheets properties states 'location C:\Users\<my name>\Desktop<my name>1 docs'

    Hello @conrail,

Is your OS is installed on C:\?

If you have NOT relocated your User folders, then please type the below and press <Enter> . . .
    Code:
    findstr /C:"[SR]" "%windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log" > "%UserProfile%\Desktop\SFC_Details.txt"
Copy the contents of the SFC_Details.txt file on your Desktop into your post.

This will find out if anything at all has been logged.

    I hope this helps!

The thing is, whether anything is actually logged or not, the SFC_Details.txt file should appear on your Desktop.

[1] Is your OS installed on C:\?
[2] You are running it from the cmd prompt aren't you?

Out of curiosity, can you please run sfc.exe /scannow

    I hope this helps!
