Have the 2004 issues been sorted out yet?

    Hi guys,
Ive been holding off installing version 2004 because the general feeling a few months ago was that it wasnt quite ready. I am at the point of doing a clean installation that Ive been putting off for a while. I have a 1909 flash drive that I created with the Media Creation Tool several months ago or I could create a brand new flash drive for a 2004 clean install with the Media Creation Tool.
There was an SSD trimming/defrag problem that I didnt like the sound of. I also recall people discussing how DISM wasnt working correctly with 2004. It would either report that problems were fixed or incorrectly report that a problem hadnt been fixed when it had.
Have these issues been fixed yet? ...
and what is the general feeling on stability nowadays on the 2004 upgrade? Is it worth installing yet or would it be advisable to clean install 1909 and stick with that for now?

There was an SSD trimming/defrag problem
    - resolved. Discussed elsewhere in the forum- feel free to search.

Have you looked at the News section?
Known and Resolved issues for Windows 10 May 2020 Update version 2004

File explorer search: there's a fix which has been recently found to revert behaviour reported in another thread.
A few are reporting issues with Windows Hello.
There is an issue with the internet icon showing disconnected, yet connecting for some.
The latest update is reported as breaking an aspect of Hypervisor.

This discussion is repeated elsewhere in the forum.

Look at the list resolved here:
    KB4571744 Cumulative Update Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.488 - Sept. 3

It's huge. Does that give confidence everything has been resolved?

    The latest is this:
    KB4571756 Cumulative Update Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.508 - Sept. 8
    - a particular problem reported widely:
    https://www.windowslatest.com/2020/0...t-found-error/

If you don't need to upgrade- don't.

If you want to try it- well, hopefully you're using disk imaging routinely, which will give you another means of reverting if you wish to try it.

That was fixed in the optional CU for build 19041.488....

    • Addresses an issue that causes the Optimize Drives dialog to incorrectly report that previously optimized drives need to be optimized again.

    KB4571744 Cumulative Update Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.488 - Sept. 3

...and is now in the latest Patch Tuesday CU for build 19041.508. That was the last remaining issue as far as I was concerned and I have now updated my two SSD machines from 1909 to 2004.

....I also recall people discussing how DISM wasnt working correctly with 2004...

    Fixed in build 19041.329

    • Addresses an issue in which the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) tool might incorrectly report that damage is still present after using the command /restorehealth. This can occur even when the damage has been repaired.
    KB4557957 Cumulative Update Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.329 - June 9

I'd be happy to install 2004, but there's no harm in being ultra-cautious. 1909 is in full support until May 2021. TBH, there's little that is significantly new in 2004, I'm hard pressed to see much difference from 1909.

and PIN is now supported for Safe Mode login (although password is still required for command prompt and System Restore via Advanced Startup, so a discrepancy remains).

20H2 offers even less to look forward to... which could be a good thing of course.

Its a clean install on a 2 year old Desktop PC

Thanks guys for your feedback. The links that you've provided show just how many problems needed sorting out in version 2004! That is one helluva list of fixes. Obviously I didnt read through all of it!!! lol
After considering the benefits/new features of installing 2004 against the potential bugs, I think I might hold off on 2004 and clean install 1909 again instead. Its supported until May 2021 so that allows more time for Microsoft to get to the bottom of all the issues with 2004. I realise that every new version will have problems but 2004 seems to be particularly problematic.
Considering that 202H is due for release in the next couple of months...would you advise making 2004 installation media with the Media Creation Tool just in case there are ongoing issues with 202H after its released. I ask because when May 2021 comes around I will be forced to upgrade and Im guessing that Windows Update would then force me to install version 202H. Who knows 202H might be worse!! In that case it would be nice to have the option to install a stable version of 2004 instead (assuming that by the time May 2021 comes around Microsoft have got the 2004 issues fully sorted and stable)

You can download any build of Win 10 whenever you like- please see the relevant tutorial.

20H2 will be delivered as 1909 was, and introduces- near enough - nothing new.

20H2 broke the task manager Startup Tab Impact stats. I verified by uninstalling the Enhancement Trigger package, testing it was still there, reinstalled trigger, gone. It's been reported on feedback.

And the Photo Viewer in 2004 is still broke, it freezes up after you open 5 or 6 pictures, but there are plenty of free photo viewers out there.

    or

Restore Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10

It`s from a earlier version of Windows and works fine.
