i only get this message when boot to desktop, but i don't get it every time. maybe once every few weeks. it's a fresh OS. program installs are limited. all programs that are installed have automatic updates turned off. msconfig no programs start on boot and all non microsoft services are disabled. not sure what else to do. anybody have any ideas?
Hi, it sounds a little as if you have been modifying a number of aspects of your startup sequence, somewhat akin to a clean boot (Google that if unsure)- but it sounds as if you have done that manually. I.e. it sounds a little unusual.
You might get some information were you to look at your Reliability History (red X's) focussing on the time at which this error occurred.
It is possible you might get a clue from that dialogue window itself were you to trace it back to its originating process.
Start with e.g. Winspy (free)- drag its target onto the dialogue and inspect Winspy's GUI for info on the process. However you might only see it's a standard MS process reporting the failure.
If you look at startups with Autoruns (free from MS) you may still find some non-MS drivers and other items being loaded on startup. It's also possible some are loaded by scheduled tasks- which Autoruns also shows.
i wouldn't say i've done any modifications to boot. i just don't allow stuff to load on boot. i only want stuff to launch when i'm using it.

are you saying download the program WinSpy++ and that program can analyze the error box that pops up and tell me the source of the error?
i downloaded autoruns, that is cool program. i was shocked by all the stuff that was loading on boot that i didn't know about.

Yes Autoruns is one of a great suite of tools - there's a whole book about using them- just don't disable anything by MS unless you know exactly what you're doing.
i did search for it in windows search before i asked you. it does not show up in windows search for some reason.
reliability monitor shows autostart program viewer error. when i click on it shows Autoruns64.exe. i search for that on my drive but only find event reports.
Error code: 0x8007000b = An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.
Consider a system restore if you cannot identify the program.
And / or search the event viewer for a more detailed error message.
Three ways I can find Reliability History - if searching as per the first two doesn't work for you, it may be that you have changed the Indexing Options (locations) and lost certain default locations or even disabled Windows search.
