    Risks Of Changing Folder Structure

I am running Win 10 Pro 1903 build 18362.1082. I have a 2Tb internal with 1Tb partition for my personal folder structure. I also have a 4Tb external with 2 partitions for archiving finished folders. I would like to organize my personal folder structure so they are no more than 2 or 3 deep. Are there any risks involved in changing the folder structure? I would be changing well over 50,000 folders.

    Many Thanks,
    MamaWolf

Hi, create a full backup (e.g. disk image - hopefully you are using disk imaging regularly and routinely already e.g. Macrium Reflect - free/paid) and then you can recover from any mistakes. Update that backup (image file set) periodically through your changes.

Of course there are risks- e.g. in moving a folder to the wrong location.

However things can go badly wrong when moving data to an external disk. A good way to help protect yourself is to
    a. copy the data to the external disk
    then when that has completed
    b. delete the original data

    - rather than moving the data- especially if a large number of files.

Can you give us an example of what you will be doing?

Where are these folders? How deeply are they nested? Are they personal folders based off of your user account or are they else where?

As long as they are not system (or system generated) folders you can pretty much do whatever you want with them.

As dalchina said, backup is critical before you start.

With 50,000 folders (!) I would say the main risk is boredom leading to inattention. How will you move the folders? Drag and drop can lead easily to things disappearing when they get dropped in the wrong place.
