Default User Directory No Permission - is that right?

I have a crowded desktop and reducing the icons in my user desktop directory didn't help much so I figured they're all in the default user directory.

but when I went to get in there I go told I had no permission.

when I looked at the permissions nothing seemed to have any permissions. I am logged in as an admin.

What should the situation be and how can I safely change it to let me clean up some of those desktop icons?

If you mean the profile at C:\Users\Default then don't try to alter it. It is a template used in the creation of new user accounts.

You might have meant to refer to C:\Users\Public\Desktop because that is the source for several shortcuts on a typical desktop. They can also be copied or deleted directly where they appear on your desktop itself.

That was precisely my problem. Thank you.

I know I can delete right onscreen on the desktop but what I'm intending to do is create subdirectories and stuff all like links in there.

If that's your objective, you might find you're better off creating a 'Taskbar toolbar' than a set of subfolders on the Desktop.
    - Taskbar toolbar subfolders fly out XP-style.
    - You can stick whatever you want wherever you want. Shortcuts to applications, shortcuts to individual files, shortcuts to folders, ...
    - Maintaining it is easy. The whole thing or any of its subfolders can be opened in File explorer so you can drag & drop shortcuts into it, rename things, delete things, reorganise into different subfolders, ...
    - My Taskbar toolbar "Menus" is my main UI. I cannot remember the last time I had to use the Start menu.

I've just been messing with that and it seems great. But I have screwed it up a bit. Destroyed my 'languages' toolbar for instance. Do you know how I get that back?

Somehow I lost my new toolbar and that language thing. My display is a bit crook. I can't see the || you're talking about but just grope around in the dark. I couldn't get anything to slide left far enough to go past the six icons I've got sitting down there, I don't know why. I think the system puts them there if you inadvertently install a prog that runs on startup, would that be it? : I've got opera, lmms, mail, skype, edge and firefox down there.

I couldn't get my new toolbar to move left of them. Should it?

It's just a folder, if the folder still exists in File explorer [or can be restored from the Recycle bin] then it can be re-added as a Taskbar toolbar.

They only appear when you Unlock the Taskbar.

Yes, it should. Just keep moving your mouse.

Nothing about Taskbar toolbars is affected at all by whether things run on Startup.

If you have any further questions, try posting screenshots / snipping tool pictures*** / ... to illustrate what you see. This should help me give more useful responses.

*** I think Snipping tool is likely to give better pictures for our current purposes because you can select just the small area that you want to discuss.

If you ever want to post diagrams of any kind then you can refer to any of this set of guidance articles. Just select the appropriate tool for any particular job.
