    Add borders to windows?

I have spent the longest time (if you add it all up over the past few weeks) trying to find out how to get borders to my application/Explorer windows in Windows 10, as I have in Windows 7. I have experimented with no end of settings as recommended by any number of posts I have found via Google, but all I have is a title bar. No borders to any application window.

I am very reluctantly moving from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Pro full time, at least on my 'Gaming' PC (X-Plane) - it's got to the stage of course where I have little choice, as new updates to programmes and games no longer support Windows 7, but I am not having fun in the process, by any stretch of the imagination. Why Microsoft had to change the great user interface it had in Win7 to the frustration of Win10 I have no idea - everything seems to be hidden away and I spend so much time having to resort to Google in order to find the most basic of stuff! Sorry, I am starting to rant! Move on...

(I know there is a way to change the look of Windows 10 to that of Windows 7, but is that 'recommended'? Hacking that deep down never seems to me a very good idea and is likely to throw up unwanted issues (?).

    Many thanks.

Hi, try using the buit-in hidden theme Aerolite. Documented in various places in tenforums including this tutorial:
Install Aerolite Theme in Windows 10

Easy way to do that is with Winaero's great free tweaker:

Now you won't get what I show there- those semi-transparent configurable borders are from Aeroglass (3rd party)- adds narrow borders to apps too.

So that gives you 2 different ways.

    More -
    a. Open Shell start menu - here I've borrowed the Win 7 orb.
    b. Win 7 icons for many: 1 program (free) changes 70+
    c. Coloured backgrounds: Qttabbar (free) for file explorer + a minor registry hack for others (e.g. Wordpad).

Just a comment, I believe the thinking of the Microsoft programming team/s for some time has been for Clean, eliminate non-productive distractions. Of course they screwed that up some time back with default saving of all downloads to the Desktop, fortunately changed that not too long later.

Hi. Thanks for the replies. I did see mention of Aerolite when I was originally Googling the problem, but assumed it was a third-party addon, so didn't look further. Will Aerolite put borders back onto non-Windows programmes too? In Win7, games and addon programmes all have borders around their GUI.. in Win10 none of them does. If Aerolite doesn't act on everything (it does only mention 'Windows Apps', as far as I can see), there's no point in my looking further really. Just have to get used to the 'new look'

One thing all the Googling I did revealed is how much resentment there is out there at Microsoft for changing stuff just for the sake of it or for 'aesthetics'. Why remove this option (and so much other stuff) in the first place.

But I can feel a rant coming on again, so will stop short! Their PR dept must know what they are doing, I assume (???).

    Just a word of caution:

The AeroLite Theme doesn't play nicely with some elements within Dark Explorer.

Winaero Tweaker had the option you want.

Customize the size of the window frame. You can reduce or enlarge it. In Windows 10, apply the Aero Lite theme to get borders working. It does not work with the default theme of Windows 10.

EDIT - Never mind. I see the post where it's already mentioned about the Aero Lite.

There are other threads about changing Win 10 to look like '7 - and don't forget Windowblinds by Stardock.
However, the relatively recent introduction of dark mode - if you wish to use that- adds another factor as mentioned above.

Thanks again. I think that I had best leave things as they are. I have windows set to dark - easier on the eye. The lack of borders on windows after so many years using Win7 looks odd/wrong but I suppose I will get used to it!

Getting used to it is one thing..., accepting it is another!!!
