    Mobo died installing new one

    Hi Guys

My wife's Mobo has died and i need to install a new one and the question is i cloned the Samsung SSD HDD drive with only the operating system on it with Samsung data migration all working and tested and the operating system was the free upgrade to Win10 pro a year or so back, if i rebuild her computer with a new motherboard and install the cloned SSD into that will it work or is there going to be major issues?

    Thanks for any help.

As long as you are not switching booting modes (UEFI v. legacy BIOS) or switching drive controller modes (AHCI v. RAID v. NVMe), you should not have any problems.

What sort of Windows license did the machine have?

Windows may well deal with the hardware change without issues, but there may be a problem with activation.

If the license was retail, it ought to be OK. At worst, you'd have to contact Microsoft for assistance with activation. At the other extreme (appliance PC like Dell or HP), the license would not be transferrable to a new motherboard.

Sorry for the late reply but my modem died and i had to replace it.

The tower is a custom build by the local computer shop and the license was the free upgrade from Win7 to Win10 a year or so back when the push was on to upgrade and i downloaded the free Win10 upgrade and Microsoft licensed it and it has worked fine ever since and was hoping to install the old Samsung SSD into a new custom build with a Samsung SSD and update whatever drivers as required, maybe using Samsung data migration in the process as i have used that before and it worked great.

The worst that can happen is that you need to ring MS. Typing slui 4 in the run box brings up the free phone number.

The Windows 7 could be a OEM version. OEM versions are cheaper but legally only usable on the original computer it was installed on. I don't know if there's a way to check with the computer not working.

You might be surprised. It is possible that it may work without any problems. I have swapped drives from my old computers to my new computers and everything worked on the first boot including the activation.

All fixed guys swapped my SSD into new build and my wife's SSD into my old tower and away they went with only minor issues, so all is good.
