lol I hadn't seen that tutorial. The funny thing is that in Vista & Win7, I didn't need to change anything to have Numlock working from boot on any of my home desktops. On Win8 my main desktop required the value '2' for InitialKeyboardIndicators. In Win10, on the rig in my sig, the value '2' only worked from a warm boot but would fail on a cold boot. The only way to get it to work was to change the value to either '2147483650' decimal or '80000002' in hex. The 'Fast Startup' option just appears to make it work for all machines although is not required for mine. Why? I don't know. It just seems that everyone has unique hardware / software configurations that require slightly different settings. It would be much easier if MS had a simple numlock setting for the keyboard in the Control Panel somewhere.

Edit: If you look at another tenforums thread Numlock defaults to off, you can see how the value '2' occasionally fails in a cold boot for other folks too.

This is exactly how I fixed it:
Go to the power options via settings
Make sure the tickbox for "Turn on fast start-up (recommended)" is UNTICKED

Then open up the registry (regedit) and go to
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard
Change the value of InitialKeyboardIndicators to 2147483650

I just want to add that you had the right number earlier (ie 2) but you had to add the 2 to the original number (2147483648+2=2147483650 decimal or 80000002 in hex)

And that's it (I hope)

This fix worked for me. I changed to using a PIN for login but the NUMLOCK key on my Dell laptop was off at the login screen and there is no BIOS option to change it. This fix worked. I've since re-enabled fast start up and ll is fine.

I press the numlock key after PC has booted which also clears the lock screen so I can begin typing.

That's a nifty idea! A bit of extra security as well if someone is looking over your shoulder :)

Thanks for this. It solved mine with value of 2 and reboot. I have a k330 logitech keyboard and always had problem logging in with alphanumeric password. Thanks much!!!

Hi, where do I do this? My numlock worked fine at first and now will not work at all. I am not very tech savvy. I'm 68. Just got this new keyboard and I need the numlock on.

Win+r -> regedit.exe means Press The Windows key + the R key, type regedit.exe. Click OK or press Enter is assumed.
HKEY_USERS -> .DEFAULT -> Control Panel -> Keyboard -> InitialKeyboardIndicators this is the keys you have to navigate while in regedit.exe.
Edit the value, and set it to 2 means double click on InitialKeyboardIndicators and change it to 2.
shut down Regedit, and reboot. is self explanatory.

Is there more info you need?
