Every time I read a thread like this I become ever more convinced not to ever run a windows update ever again.

When update equates to downgrade ... or to failure ... it seems wise to skip the hassle.
I'll get my next update when I replace this desktop when it's six or eight years old.

    @Mikey89 I understand your frustration on the 2004 3-hour update time-frame.
Unfortunately, we cannot see your PC in order to explain why.
Personally, I’m happy to know you had a successful outcome.

I have a used Dell Inspiron 580 desktop with a 1 TB HDD that was originally Windows7, now on Windows 10 Home. I updated to 2004 a few weeks after it was ready on June 1 via WU. Fortunately, it took about 52 minutes and it runs fine.

I also have a refurbished HP EliteBook 8540w laptop originally Windows 7 Pro, now on Windows 10 Pro version 1909.
It has a 320 GB HDD. It’s ready for 2004 via WU. I’ll be doing that a few weeks after Sep 8 Patch Tuesday.

Updated the machine I use at work to 2004 today. I already knew it would take hours so used another pc while the upgrade took place.

It took 3+ hours on my oldest PC with HDD

But that was with downloading, installing, getting things ready, installing, getting things ready and so on till the end.

    It works well so far.

    Hello

Yesterday i decided to let W10 go ahead and download feature update 2004 and be done with it already because it was appearing as "pending" in Windows Update.

Now before this i knew it might take some time but i never imagined it would take this long.

It took 3 HOURS for me. And yes i'm using an HDD not an SSD but how in the hell could MS push out an update that takes 3 HOURS to finish and i didn't even knew if after this if W10 will need to reinstall drivers and other stuff. Fortunetly it didn't need to do that. But my frustration is with MS and the BIG update.

    So i'm asking : WHY ?

Just why... why did hey have to put out such a massive update so that the regular user has to sit around and do nothing for 3 hours and then waste another hour (4 hours in total) just to figure out if all his SHIT is as it should be.

And no, i didn't make this topic just to express my anger with this.

I also wanted to ask how much it took for other users ?
I was notified about 2004 a week or so ago, and had no problems at all. I didn't time it, but the download/install wasn't more than an hour or so.

I have had the occasional update that took at least a couple or three hours, though.

Why ask why? Unless Microsoft really messed something up or your computer is messed up in the first place this upgrade so go as smooth as any updates could go. my laptop got the update pretty quickly it just seems longer because its bigger.

Me, too. I have to keep resources available as I never know what will be needed until getting to a client's computer and they don't like to pay for my time just keeping an eye on the progress of things, don't really understand that things happen or don't happen in a hurry.

I haven't had any problems with Version 2004 since starting the installs a couple weeks ago but did take a computer out of service to rehook a Version 1909 to work with solving a client's problem.
Berton. I've been running 2004 for more than a week (I think), and so far, it's just as stable as 1909, if not more so.

I've been running 2004 on some of my machines since it was released on May 27th, a couple of them were offered it immediately through Windows Update. No issues at all except one - Defrag/Optimise's inability to remember when it was last run.

I'm crossing my fingers that the Preview Cumulative that Beta and RP got Wednesday will come out today, then the Optimiser's memory will return. The fix works great in Beta and RP. Cut it all lose, MS!
