    getting error message

an attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007000B.

it's popped up a few times. i wasn't trying to load a program. only thing running on my machine was chrome. the error in event viewer says the source of the error was ChkUpd. any ideas?

Does it show in Startup tab of msconfig, if it does, disable it, and Restart.

    I hope this helps!

there is no mention of it being startup related. everything in msconfig/startup is disabled.

It could be launched by a scheduled task created by a program you've installed.

One way to check if chkupd.exe exists there is to use this freeware program that lists all tasks liinearly, and provides a useful search:

Another approach is to use a fast indexing search tool such as
    Everything by voidtools
    Locate32
    Ultrasearch

    - let it index your PC then search for chkupd
