    Black Screen After Installing Update

After installing an update, there is nothing but a black screen. The black screen appears after the BIOS logo, Windows logo, and sign-in screen. The Ctrl-Alt-Del screen also does not come up when using the shortcut, nor does task manager, run, etc. I have had this issue twice, and the only way I have solved it was to uninstall the latest update.

I don't know if this is important or not, but when it first started, there were some power fluctuations (as in, turning on and off really quickly) where I live. Then this issue happened, and I managed to fix by uninstalling the latest update, but it wasn't the actual cause that time. Only this latest time, when I installed the update and got the issue, was it the "cause". I managed to fix it the same way, by uninstalling the latest update that had just been installed.

I also know that it isn't a hardware issue, since the hardware works just fine. Another thread I saw when I was researching this issue the first time suggested it might be a corrupted registry, could that be the issue? Also, is it worth trying an in-place upgrade repair install, to see if that might allow an update to install without this issue?

    Hi Aaron

You should probably try opening a command prompt as admin and running sfc /scannow
    Then try entering: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If these come up clean, I would just uninstall the update, then do an upgrade or clean install of the May 2020 Feature Update (2004).

Ofc, use a program like" Macrium Reflect (free), to make a full OS image backup, first. Definitely make the Macrium bootable media as well.

If you do decide to do a clean install or upgrade to (2004)... after it's done, you can run Disk Cleanup (like in the pic below), to remove all the left overs.

/e Only other thing I can think of is redo the video card drivers.

    DDU Instructions - Nvidia
    1. Get this program, here: Official Display Driver Uninstaller DDU Download ...get the latest version, and save it to your desktop.
    2. Get your vid card driver here, use the Manual Search: Official GeForce Drivers | NVIDIA ...save this to your desktop.
    3. Reboot into Safe Mode and run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) choose the "Highly Recommend Option", and just do what it tells you.
    4. After it's done, reboot to normal mode, then just double click the Nvidia driver to install. If it want's to reboot, let it.

If you get occasional power fluctuations you need to pick up an inexpensive UPS from a local store or from Amazon because sooner or later you’re going to have a serious problem. BTW, I hope you’re making regular backups with Macrium or a similar product.
