192 processes running - What can safely be turned off?

    Windows 10 Home 1909

I think I have far too many processes running (192 seems like a lot when I don't have a lot of programs running) but I'm not sure what to do to get the count down.

I've come across 'Sycnex /Windows10Debloater' but read that it is best to use it before creating a profile (which I've already created) and can cause problems if a profile has been created.

Hi, perform a clean boot (Google or see tutorial), then count how many.

The difference will give you some idea of how many have been added by programs you've installed and load.

Much more significant is resource usage. When nominally idle do you have plenty of free RAM and is your CPU, disk an internet usage near zero?

Just checked now and there are 203 now running.

Network and Disk are at 0%
    CPU is 4%
Memory is 40% but I do have Firefox running with quite a few tabs open (trying to sort out problems with Windows 10!) .

It's never bothered me how many are running. Actually there may be more than you think.

Process explorer lists 253 for me.

The first step would be to determine what processes are automatically starting, and out of those, what are necessary.

A good tool to start with is the portable version of Revo Uninstaller Free.

Revo Uninstaller Free - Remove unwanted programs easily

    On the toolbar, select Tools.

    Attachment 291470

On the left-hand side, select Autorun Manager.

A second tool to use is Sysinternals Process Explorer.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...ocess-explorer

In the toolbar, click on Options > VirusTotal.com > Check VirusTotal.com

Each process will be checked for malware, and the results displayed in a separate column.

Process Explorer is useful in determing what a process is doing.

A third tool to use is the BlackViper Service Configuration PowerShell script.

    Release Black Viper Script v6.2.3 . madbomb122/BlackViperScript . GitHub

There is no installation. Unzip the contents and run the Windows batch file (that runs the PowerShell script) _Win10-BlackViper.bat

On the main page, it lists three options - Default (Windows defaults), Safe, and Custom (which allows you to import saved settings or a custom setting).

It shows you what the Windows services defaults are, and what the script suggests you can safely change.

In the Script Options > Miscellaneous section there is a "dry run" setting that will give you a preview, without making any changes.

I would set that first before running the script.

In the Logging section, there is a setting to backup the current services settings, either as a .CSV file. a .REG file, or both.

I've run it on our systems here with no issues.

I'm currently running 118 processes, including Firefox on Windows 10 Pro 1909, fully patched.

As usual, at the very least, create a System Restore point before making any changes to your system.

However, a current disk image backup is always the best "safety net" you can have.

I would use Autoruns to disable third party stuff you may not need.https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...loads/autoruns
