    Windows 2004 freezing

I have been running 2004 since it came out with no problems but tonight I was scrolling Firefox (79) and the PC froze. Mouse would still move but nothing on the desktop would respond, scrolling stopped and keyboard was not responsive either just mouse cursor. Anyone else had this? My friend from Australia says 2004 has froze on him a few times and he has gone back to 1909. Any fixes?

There are several current issues with 2004 -

Known and Resolved issues for Windows 10 May 2020 Update version 2004

That said, do the following -

    Right-click on the Start icon.

    Select Event Viewer

    Expand Custom Views

Click Administrative Events, and look for entries around the time the "freezing" happened.

Unfortunately I did an In Place Upgrade after the freeze although I did have a quick look at the event viewer at the time and there was just an unexpected shutdown entry. Event vwr only shows events since the in place upgrade although lots of errors relating to DHCP.

    That should be looked at.

Take a screen shot and post.

Open a Command prompt and run the following (copy and paste) -

    ipconfig /all > "%userprofile%\Desktop\ipconfig.txt"

Attach the text file ipconfig.txt, that was saved on your Desktop.

Ethernet adapter vEthernet (New Virtual Switch):

    Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.227.60(Preferred)

The IPv4 address for this adapter is a "link local" IP, which is assigned when it cannot get an address from a DHCP server.

Likely the cause of the errors in the Event Log.

Settings > Network & Internet > Change adapter options

Right-click on the adapter and select Properties.

On the Networking tab (default), click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and click the Properties button.

On the General tab (default), and configure one of two ways -

    1. Set both the IP and DNS to Obtain automatically, which means the information will come from the router.

2 . Manually configure with the appropriate IP addresses, which would look something like this -

    Attachment 291372

My personal preference is to get the IP and DNS automatically. Then, if I need to change DNS servers, I only need to change it in one place, rather than every adapter on every system.

    Whatever works for you.
