Computer in Continual Restart after update

One of my computers received the May 2004 update over the weekend. When I woke it up, there was a message that the computer needed to restart. Should I restart it now or later. Foolishly, i said OK to the restart now. Now the blue screen saying "Restarting" has been on for 15-20 minutes. The hard drive light is illuminating once every 5 seconds or so. The screen does not say almost there nor does it give a percentage of completion. It just says Restarting.

Is there anything I can do? Will shutting it off and restarting be catastrophic?

    Thanks for any thoughts.

Well, I took a chance and hard powered it off. Waited a couple of minutes and powered it back on. I am now seeing this message: Working on updates. 100% complete Don't turn off your computer.Took a few minutes but it then said restarting and now it appears to be restarting again. Went to a screen that said 67% update complete, then 100% complete. Now it's finally on my log in screen. Whew.

Now would be a good time to consider backup software, if you already haven't.

MOST of the time, what you just did works... sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't work you are usually left with a system that won't boot or is corrupted, etc. Having a backup and being able to "access" it when Windows won't boot, makes things like this a lot easier on your nervous system.

A good free option is Macrium Reflect 7.
I, and many others on here use this program and it has saved our bacon, many times.

Otherwise, good job and glad it worked out.

Thanks, me too. BTW, I do have Macrium 7 installed. Its not very user friendly for someone of my tech level, which is pretty damn low. When I get an error about a backup failing, it doesn't really tell you what the issue was in language for noobs like me. But that is a tale for another thread.

Here's how I make a backup with Macrium Reflect... I store them on my G: drive and lable them by the date I made them...

Generally by choosing the option I circled at the top in the first pic... Macrium will automatically choose the proper partition(s) for you, so that you will be able to restore to a working system.
I never make incremental or differential backups. IMO they just back up any problems you may have with Windows... with all the stuff you want backed up.

Restoring from the bootable media is highly confusing, and is something that Macrium need to fix. It's not hard... it's just confusing.

I don't even want tom try to describe the way I do and think of it, as that will probably make things worse. Maybe someone else can better explain that.

Just make sure you make a fresh clean FULL backup, stored on a different drive than your OS. And make sure you make the Macrium bootable media as well. THEN, if worse comes to worst, we will be able to walk you through restoring if/when it becomes necessary.

P.S. The best time to make a fresh clean FULL backup, is right after some major changes to the OS that haven't broken it. Like right after the May 2004 Feature Update, for example.
Wait a little bit, just to make sure you have no other issues with the May 2004 FU, then make a fresh clean FULL backup.

Great advice and instructions. I believe I have it set up properly. I will run a fresh full backup as well. Thank you!

One item I would add. You need to include the Verify option under Advanced lower left corner.

Without verifying, you may be running the risk of having a corrupt backup image, which you will not know until you need it. Not a good time to find out.

FYI: Verify will take slightly less than image backup time.

Possible VSS problems. In Macrium, up top click Other Tasks, the Fix VSS problems. Run it, follow any instructions. May ask for a restart, not sure can't test here right now. After running it and done. Try your backup again.

One final thing to try, don't see where you may have done it. Uninstall Macrium conpletely and reinstall. By completely, I mean use a deep uninstaller like Revo to get all the pieces.

Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download
