    Issue trying to restore some formats (WAV, ISO...) from recycle bin


    It's another of those very old bugs ignored by Microsoft for years...

    Repro steps:
    1. delete (will go into the recycle bin) a WAV file or an ISO file
    2. open recycle bin
    3. click on that deleted file and press button 'Restore the selected items' from recycle bin toolbar

    at this point Windows will unexpectedly ask you how to open that file format (!?) instead of restoring the file to the original path. I reported it through Feedback Hub many years ago. It's always been ignored and today on Win 10 2004 is still the same.

    Hi, just tried this with a wav file (on 1903 as you can see) - no such prompt.

    wav is currently associated with Windows Media Player - do you have an association configured?

    Why use the toolbar? Just right click the file(s) and choose: Restore. Works fine.


    /e If I use the toolbar it does the same thing. You could just associate .wav and ISO with program(s), and then it works... as dalchina said.

    If you have no association specified, Windows is trying to help you by saying 'this is a file type I don't know- what do you want me to do with it?''

    You have to click on the toolbar button, not on the context-menu (which works as expected, as Ghot also noticed).

    When you restore something from the recycle bin all Windows has to do is restoring the file to its position, not trying to open it (?!). That's the bug with the toolbar button with some file types only.
    If you use the button for ZIP files or other formats they'll be restored as expected. It acts in a unexpected way just with WAV, ISO and some other format I can't remember now.

    ... and FYI I think Windows 10 has a default association for WAV files to new app Groove Music

    P.S.
    This is a bug report hoping some MVP will make it notice to Microsoft maybe... I know I can drag'n'drop the file out of the recycle bin or use the context-menu, but the bug with the toolbar button stays

    Mmmh...
    Some minutes later.

    Actually, I did some more tests on some fresh new installed machines and all had that issue... The strange thing is that indeed I can confirm that manually re-assigning Default Program for music fixed it, even though the WAV format was ALREADY correctly associated (and to the same default tool: Groove Music!) after Windows install...
    Strange indeed, but thanks for testing and insisting on that point my friends... Only MS knows why sometimes the same actions give incoherent results (possible registry incoherent state)...
