    2004: Worst Update Ever

2004 is clearly the worst update in the history of Windows and that is saying something.

Every computer I updated is screwed up. All said they were ready for the update so I just did what they tell me.

Wake up computers and they are useless. No programs open. Can't sign out just keeps spinning. Have to do a hard reboot of the computer. Microsoft SUCKS.

    I had no such problems.

But having useless computers now is kind of a problem.

Nonsense - people say this garbage after every build.

So you were updating all at once? Because if one computer would fail, I certainly would not update the next.
Besides, everyone knows, that updates are hit or miss, upgrades are even worse, so backups are essential.

Each of my computers has had the same issue. They are non responsive after waking from sleep.

NEVER had an issue like this going back to XP.

I'm sorry to hear that, but it's not been the typical experience.

Two of my machines were offered it on 27 May within 15 minutes of its release, and have been running 2004 without issues since then. By now all of my machines have been offered 2004, and on all bar two I took up the offer. Again, there were no issues. The two that are staying on 1909 for now are awaiting the SSD/Defrag issue to be resolved.

If you still have real problems and you updated from 1909, then (unless you took the sensible precaution of making a system image you could restore) you should roll back using Settings > Recovery > Go back to the previous version of Windows 10. Then keep an eye on Known and Resolved issues for Windows 10 May 2020 Update version 2004 to see when it may be safe to try again.

I regard all feature updates as garbage as MS cannot be bothered to do effective software QA and relies on early adopters to be beta testers. It's always prudent to defer feature updates for say 3 months.

We go by the Known Issues, regardless if Windows Update says its ready, or not -

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...indows-10-2004

We can't afford the downtime debugging releases.

We're in no hurry to upgrade.

When we do, every system gets imaged beforehand, in case something goes sideways.

Never had an issue going that route.

    Hi there
some builds really are garbage --for example build 330 when both 329 and 331 are (for Windows at least - near perfect - at least on my systems).

Most of the bad builds or those with loads of defects in them are the "Insider" or test builds - and as these are essentially "Beta" or even "Alpha" status software designed for testing purposes only then you can't complain if you are using them as a "normal daily machine".

Most builds done by WU usually work -- if the update sees potential problems with your hardware or software then it will either error out or issue a message saying Not compatible or similar. This works pretty well most of the time.

Considering the sheer numbers of Windows machines around and the almost infinite variety of hard and software attached to these machines Windows does a reasonably good job in the basic release --in any case if you have a working system it's only around 10 -15 mins work to take a system backup (use Free Macrium or similar) so it can be restored if the update hoses up your system.

Insider and developer builds do have problems - that's what they are there for - very few of those will make it to the next RTM until loads of things have been more fully tested and errors fixed.

I tend to use Linux as my main OS running loads of different Windows versions as Virtual Machines - but I do have to have a dedicated Windows machine for work needs etc. -- All I can say is that if you really hate Windows just switch to another OS -- I believe the "Apple" adherents find their systems OK -- although at an unbelievably high price - and certainly it's almost impossible to do any serious experimentation on those machines too.

    Cheers
