I don't mean to be negative, but

The files don't exist so you can't right click on them.
Sometimes you get lucky if you open the folder that contained the files or even the top level folder then browse it.

Nirsoft's ShadowCopyView is a better choice IMO -

    Hi there Nika,

Don't know if this will help any/be of use but I run 4-hourly backups of certain folders (ones that are most likely to be in use) to an SD card which is permanently plugged into the PC.

Following help & advice from Try3, I wrote a script (my first) that is scheduled to run in Task Manager/Sheduler at 10:00, 14:00, 18:00 and 22:00 using Robocopy and it is configured to only backup new stuff and ignore the old (i.e. once copied to SD card, it ignores it in future unless the particular file or folder has changed).

If your PC has an SD slot, which most seem to have these days, they seem to spend the vast majority of their time empty & un-used.

I bought a 250GB SD Card which, (here in the UK costs £27.00) and I now know that should anything happen, the worst case is that I've only lost the last 4 hrs of work.

The thread where discussion of backing up to SD card using Robocopy is 1 Y.O. Laptop - suspected hard drive failure - help needed - specifically look at posts #10, 12 & 17

    Hope this helps,

    Art

Art, I use a program called MirrorFolder to do my volatile data backups. Not free ($39) but a rock solid program, easy to setup and it will backup to anything, including over a network to a NAS or another computer. I have it backup some data to a folder on another internal drive and other data across my network to a drive on another computer. I back up different data every 2 hours or 4 hours or 8 hours.

I've been using MirrorFolder for about 15 years. Great program.

Technically that is true, backing up to the same drive (even to a different partition) is of no help if the drive dies. That is why File History will only let you back up to another drive, or to a network share.

But there is a way to back up to the same drive if you really must. Share a folder, preferably one on another partition, then set up file History to use that network share. It will work because File History has no way to tell that the share is actually on the same drive.
if anyone comes across here, this person talks right, and its useful solution when you dont have external drive in your pc/laptop or NAS for scheduled backups, in this way you can set up backup on one disk drive, for actively using locations for example DESKTOP and other User files, in the same partition or another (keep in mind you have to "map shared folder" to choose it as network drive in backup settings) . and also I found there is second way to do this in windows 10 using built in "Backup and Restore (widnows 7)", you can choose the specific location and back it up in scheduled time on currently using Drive

Actually there's a way to choose the share without the need to map a drive. In File History click 'More options'....

...then click 'See advanced settings'. Here you can click 'Select a network location' then 'Add a network location' and browse for your computer and its share.

You'll end up with File History using a unc path in the form \\computer\share

oh alright thanks, I could not do that for first time it gave me some error, but now I did it. I have one question to you, is it safe to do that? or is there way to make that more secured? I mean I see people adding new users in sharing and using passwords, I dont really get that, if you could give brief outline how that works I will be glad .

I tried that and I think its almost the solution for my problem, I just wanted names of removed files and folders from specific location, that program showed me 3 snapshots two of them were made today and one was created yesterday, and the old one did really show files and folders that are removed now, now the problem is that files Im searching for were wiped out the day before yesterday, is there any way to restore older snaptshots? I dont know from where to start where are they saved and how they are removed from time to time.

You can restore individual files using ShadowCopyView.

According to tthe NirSoft web site:

    Extracting Shadow Copy Files

You can extract/copy files by from a snapshot by selecting files/folders in the lower pane and then pressing F8 ('Copy Selected Files To' option). In the 'Copy Files' dialog-box you should choose the destination folder and then press 'Do it!'. Be aware that if a file or folder is already exist in the destination folder, then ShadowCopyView will not overwrite your files, but it'll copy the files using another name.

How the hell do you download the portable version from Portable Freeware? I've been wandering around there for 10 minutes and can't find a download link.
No problem getting the installable version from NirSoft but I'd really prefer the portable version.

Edit: Never mind, no installation, just run the .exe.
