UEFI / Legacy BIOS Mess and Windows Update

    Hi

When Windows 10 ran its automatic update I got a message "Windows can't be installed because this PC has an unsupported disk layout for UEFI firmware". I think this is probably my own fault - I remember having boot problems a while ago (can't remember what caused them initially) which I eventually fixed without really understanding what I was doing.

The BIOS settings are for UEFI, not Legacy.

However, DISKPART says the disk is using MBR:

And I think that's what Disk Management is saying too:

    And this is from bcdedit:

I'd really like to avoid doing a clean reinstall of Windows 10 if possible. I vaguely recall that when I had boot problems I switched the BIOS setting to UEFI because that was the only way I could get my machine to boot after messing around with various boot record rebuilding tools that I really didn't understand.

Can anyone help me with this mess please?

Welcome to the forum. Ideally it would be best to delete all partions and do a clean install uefi to get the correct gpt disk. The problem is your on such an old windows and lots have had problems updating as the installer change and yours is out of date

Thanks for your quick reply. Is there no route to getting to a consistent legacy boot, or UEFI , without a reinstall? It would take me forever to reinstall all my programs and resync my cloud data if I had to do a clean install. I realise that a clean install is often the optimum solution.

You can use the free version of MiniTools Partition Wizard to convert MBR partitions to GPT.

Update: Now only available in the paid version.

Thanks. Partition Wizard sounds worth a try. I have a spare HDD which I can clone to as a backup if it doesn’t work. I’m a bit concerned that it might not be possible to cleanly convert the messed-up disk and I don’t have the knowledge to be able to fix it manually, but it’s worth a try.

Sorry, I’m new here. What’s the Powershell code for?

The MiniTools Partition Wizard process to convert a disk from MBR to GPT is straight-forward

    1. Click on the disk you want to convert.

    2. Select Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk.

Doing a disk image backup first would be a good idea.

It doesn’t look like the free version of Partition Wizard will convert an OS disk.

Open administrative Powershell and copy and paste:
With that much code to copy and paste, it would be a heck of a lot easier for users to just put it in a .ps1 file for them.

Since the script doesn't zip anything up, or put everything in one folder with an identifiable name, how is the user going to distingush what the script put in the Temp folder from anything else?

    Better off to use V2.
