I just read that there is a setting in the power section called 'turn on fast startup. This is not listed on my pc under shutdown settings. Only lists 'sleep' and 'lock'. Do I need to unhide this button somehow? Do I need to be signed on as ADMIN? Thank you.

My power options/systems settings don't look the same. I have no option to 'hibernate' which must be enabled. See attached
Open administrative powershell or command prompt and type or copy and paste:
powercfg /A
When this has completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread
I find Fast Start to be more trouble than worth. I have it turned off on ll my devices.
I use a drive bay to swap drives. Different drives with different OSs on them. But - I have one drive that has W10 on it for a total of 2 Win 10 drives. I swap them around to "play" with W10. I have a HDD in another removable bay on the same PC. I noticed when fast start is ON, on both W10 drives, if I leave that HDD in the bay that Windows thinks that drive is hosed up and wants to run disc scan to repair it. Then I also noticed the same thing was happening with USB connected drives. When I stopped using fast start this issue went away.
If I have fast start toggled OFF and I use shutdown.exe /s /hybrid from a shortcut is this doing the same thing fast start does?
You need to turn on hibernation - enter powercfg - h on in an admin command prompt Enable or Disable Hibernate in Windows 10 You can also use a reduced size hibernation file for fast start up only if you don't want to hibernate your PC Specify Hiberfile Type as Full or Reduced in Windows 10
I've found fast start up is of limited benefit if you have a SSD system drive and have turned it off on my PCs.
