Speech App cant run after Edge upgrade but Recognition works in apps

    This is driving me nuts.

After the latest Windows Upgrade my Speech App will not run with the message that the Recognizer language and the Display language must be the same.

I found that the update had modified my Recognizer language to EN-US so I modified it back to English UK. This IS the Display and System Language. The Speech Recognition works fine in Word etc and starts up in-app if I use Win-H and Cortana works fine. But the Windows Speech App will not work.

I am guessing that this is deep in the registry somewhere because the Language and Regoin Settings are all UK and so is the Recogniser. I am logged on with a Microsoft account and as it is a single PC there is no Group Policy applied as such.

Anyone know where I need to go.

All the Google searches would indicate the Windows Settings page causing the error but I can't see it.

I'll post up some System Specs and the relevant pages. Any help gratefully received

Hi, just puzzled slightly- you say
    After the latest Windows Upgrade
yet show build 1903, which is relatively old.. do you actually mean an upgrade to 1903? Or only the new Edge, as per your title?

Can't see anything amiss with the settings you've usefully posted.. as yet.. hopefully someone will have an idea.

You mention ' Speech App ' - which is that exactly? Voice Recorder? Windows Speech Recognition?

Or are you only referring to Dictation (Win key + H) =>

Since you are still on 1903, I would enable the features to version 1909 to see if that helps. It's a very quick update and restart, actually it just turns on features already in 1903. You say "after Edge upgrade", I'm assuming you mean to the Chromium Edge. Going from 1903 to 1909 may help.

If by 'Edge upgrade' you mean the new Chromium Edge, then there's one more language setting you should check.

    Thanks all

    Thanks all for the replies.

I am unsure why the build is 1903 since the Windows updates are all turned on.

The Edge upgrade was to Chromium Edge, which seems to be quite good so far, even if the icon looks like a dishwasher tablet :)

When I say the Speech App won't work, I am talking about the Windows Speech Recognition App

Speech App cant run after Edge upgrade but Recognition works in apps-speechapp.jpg

I get the usual error dialog:

Speech App cant run after Edge upgrade but Recognition works in apps-speecherr.jpg

Dictation (via WIn-H) and Cortana work just fine, so it isn't the microphone!

This was all running absolutely fine until an overnight Windows update that installed Chromium Edge.

It is worth saying that this PC is brand new hardware but the basis runs all the way back to Windows 95 with a LOT of upgrades along the way, so the registry is chock full of crap related to kit that no longer exists which may be the root issue. This PC is still the same one I had in 1998, it just has a new motherboard, psu, OS, hard drives, RAM, case fan, graphics card, monitors and keyboard/mouse. Since the case is the original one, it is clearly the same PC - at least that is what is I tell the wife... :)

I'll try the suggestions and let you know.

Paul, I would get updated to 1909 first, it's quick and easy, like the link I gave you for the Enablement. DO NOT upgrade to 2004 if it is offered.

Stupid question, but how do I update to 1909? I am still way more comfortable in DOS... (or VMS or OS/2)...

In 1903 the update to the next version (was 1909, now offering 2004) is entirely optional. You have to go into Windows Update and click 'Download and install' to start it. You will only be automatically updated when your current version is at or near end of support, that's December 8, 2020 for your 1903.

I would recommend updating to 1909 which is in support until May 11, 2021. It's a minor update that installs quickly, the same way as a cumulative update. I wouldn't recommend 2004 yet, still has some bug to shake out.

To make Windows Update offer 1909 again, go into Windows Update's Advanced options and defer Feature Updates by enough days to stop it offering 2004. As 2004 was released on 27th May 2020 that would need to be deferred by at least 32 days, try 40 to be sure.

f14tomcat gave you a link to the enablement package. 1909 adds nothing significant, and stared by breaking file explorer search which MS changed, and then tried to fix with subsequent updates.

Read all about it by Googling '1909 search broken'. Not that I would put you off installing it, of course!

The recogniser language must match the language of the user interface. Please change the recogniser language in the Speech Recognition control panel under Advanced Options.

Here's the error message OCR'd for search purposes.

Should you wish to uninstall Edge Chromium if Bree's idea doesn't help to see what happens see e.g.

From the Enablement link I gave you. Follow Shawn's link he posted, very easy and quick.
