Got the ISO. Spent some time reading the blog about his legal battles with Amazon...

The language thing has got me slightly worried. These are the results I get but the issue I am trying to resolve is a Language Clash between en-GB and en-US so may be expected.

Will it cause me any issue...

I'll let you know how it goes...

    Just taking a backup :)

This free prog lets you cycle thru the range of accented characters for a number of languages- you can construct your own too- so you can enter any appropriate character merely by typing the basic character, and cycling through the options with 1 key.

Very neat, as it works anywhere you can type.

    Very neat.

I have finished the repair install. First thing I saw was this:

Speech App cant run after Edge upgrade but Recognition works in apps-speechwoe.jpg

Then I went into Advanced Speech Options in the Control Panel and got this:

Speech App cant run after Edge upgrade but Recognition works in apps-advancedspeechwoe.jpg

Changed the Recogniser to English - US and lo and behold, the Windows Speech App come up.

Interestingly, Windows had uninstalled the English UK voice so the Voice preview for Hazel; George and Susan did not work. Soon fixed by adding the Voice Package.

    However...

Cortana will not now work and the Dictation applet accessed with Win-H gives me this:

Speech App cant run after Edge upgrade but Recognition works in apps-speechbar.jpg

I am now REALLY confused because the Speech Recogniser and the selected Display Language are EXPLICITLY different but the Speech App works.

Last throw of the dice may be to set EVERYTHING to en-US, uninstall the en-GB Language pack and see if things start working and then try and add my native language back in gently...

Anyone got anything to throw in to the mix?

Just a quick update before bed...

All sort of working now. Settings kept reverting to English (United States), so I removed the US Language Pack and it all seems to work but... Settings isn't very happy...

Final update - I checked for updates, ran those through. Re-booted and...

    Et voilà! C'est bien

Everything seems to be working. I am now stepping away...

Many thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Really appreciate it.

Just this. Your problems arise due to having an en-us base install to which you have added an en-gb language pack.

You seem to have resolved your problems for now, but if they return this may be of use.

Back when my Win7 machine (System One in my specs below) got its free upgrade to Win10 I had to add the UK English pack. This was because despite being a UK model the OEM installed Win7 was an en-us install and it got the en-us version of 10240 (1507). Come the upgrade to 1511 I lost the UK English pack because it had to be upgraded with an en-us 1511 ISO. You cannot keep your installed apps if you upgrade to the next version with an ISO of a different language from your base install (as I found when I tried) so I had to use the 1511 en-us ISO.

I then performed an in-place upgrade from 1511 en-us to 1511 en-gb. You can keep your installed apps if you are just changing the dialect of your base English language install with an 'upgrade' to the same version you currently have installed.

A repair install is a feature in-place upgrade using install media for the same Windows version and edition than the underlying OS. If you repair install Windows 10 with install media with different regional version of same base language, the display language will be changed, but all settings, installed apps and software and user data is kept intact.
An example: Running repair install on EN-US Windows 10 using EN-GB install media ....

Glad it all worked out- in this case persistence has paid off.

I have US-based Win 10, UK language packs. Apart from an initial struggle discovering just how many different packs of various kinds are required (why does it how to be so hands-on?) I've not had issues, fortunately.

Thanks for that - I wasn't sure if en-GB was English - International but was pretty sure if I repaired with just English it wouldn't get any worse. Got a bit worried when the Settings went strange.

I don't like Apple devices because you can't get under the hood. Windows 10 is increasingly like that but in this case, hats off to Microsoft, despite the fact they caused the issue in the first place

Several hours I won't get back but I found the Forum, so all in all, it is a bargain.

    Thanks all.

Yes, en-gb is also known as 'English International' and is the one with UK spelling. For US English use the en-us media.
