Or just defer feature updates sufficiently so that 2004 is no longer offered. Then Windows Update reverts to offering 1909.

Updating 1903 to 1909 via Windows Update will record the update in your Update History, manually installing the enablement package won't.

Let us know, Paul, when 1909 is up and running, and if it had any effect on the issue. Thanks.

The ins and outs of Windows 10

Ok. Used dism to move to 1909 which went without a hitch.

No option under my Updates to defer feature updates, as far as I can see. But this is what drives me nuts about Windows 10. I cut my teeth on PCs back in the eighties when we would load drivers through Autoexec.bat and Batch.sys and the order was really important so that the memory overlays would not exceed 1024 Kb.

Ah the excitement when we took delivery of our first 10Mb hard drive (what were we going to do with all that space?).

Now I am at the mercy of a Microsoft UI that won't let me tinker... sigh. I am getting old.

Good news is that the PC is fully functional and Coratana is burbling away. Bad news is I still have the issue.

OK. I have played around to eliminate some stuff and to give some extra information:

    • Tried logging on with a local account instead of my Microsoft Account
    • Re-installed the Motherboard Audio Drivers (MSI Tomahawk B450)
    • Checked sapisvr was in startup with SpeechUX as a parameter
    • Added in the Registry Entry for enabling Speech Recognition (it was enabled anyway but I am beginning to think that this is a subtle registry setting somewhere)
    • Uninstalled Chromium Edge
    • Changed the Display Language and Recogniser to EN-US (didn't think it would like that with a UK locale, but it was ok)

Still the same error. Irony is that I do not really NEED Speech Recognition but it is just annoying me now. Computers should be deterministic. Mine just seems to be determined...

Really appreciate all of the suggestions and at least I have a newer build than 1903.

Hi, perhaps unfortunate you didn't try to reverse whatever update you received to confirm that was responsible.
Remember that newer isn't ALWAYS best when it comes to MS major builds, esp. when first released.

Perhaps you've seen threads like this:
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...0-df6de3178b97

found by searching for the error message which I posted for you above in text form. Plenty more results if you search for that.

You might try removing the UK speech pack and reinstalling it if you've not already.

There used to be more Control Panel options related to Language- I guess these have been removed.

These are some settings I've noted- there may be nothing new.

Very much appreciate the reply. All of the Settings are definitely correct.

I have even tried installing French as a display language and changing everything to French, which I can speak and understand tolerably well. Interestingly, the French Voice package got added in and was available as a Recognizer language, but when I changed back to English, the "Remove" option was not available. It had even installed a French voice for Algeria.

I have now uninstalled the French language pack and the Voice package has gone as well and is not available in the Speech Control Panel as a recogniser language but the voice of "Hortense" is shown as available.

I am almost certain that Windows has got itself confused and that deep down in the Registry somewhere there is a clash between US and UK English. I have tried removing English (UK) as a language pack and setting the Region as US but to no avail. Something VERY subtle is going on.

Another user has confirmed that in their experience receiving 'Edgium' had no effect on Speech Recognition.

You might try removing all language packs and performing an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data'. You can download an appropriate iso - see the relevant tutorial.

Thank you. The en-US and en-GB language packs are not behaving as they should. I suspect that a hardware change followed by the update later on has thoroughly confused the O/S. All my experience tells me that this won't get sorted by the standard UI tools. I can feel some Registry hacking coming on...

Not that I would recommend that, of course. If I do go wrong though I do have the comfort of my six other PC's...

    - - - Updated - - -

Having had a play, the only Language Pack installed is en-GB but en-US is liberally sprayed around the registry and some of those keys are locked due to Cortana (which I had to "persuade" to switch to an English voice through a registry edit, since the UI did not work).

I have no idea which of the thousands of support files outside the registry is responsible for the fact that I cannot remove the US Voice package or why the Speech Recognisers insist on displaying two US Text to Speech entries and a US Speech Recogniser.

Frustrating but I will try the suggested in-place repair but I am not hopeful.

On the plus side, Hortense and Claude sont morts. Désolé.

You'll need an iso of the same build (1909 I believe) and base language - e.g. via Heidoc iso downloader (free). You probably know you log in, rt click the iso file, Mount, then run setup.exe.

If unsure, you can check the default language of your Win 10.
See System Default UI Language of Windows 10

Je suis vraiment désolé - mes condoléances.
